Drumshanbo Lock is a double-acting lock. It can work whether the level of
the lake is above or below that of the canal. It has moorings, water, light, a
shower and toilet block, a lockkeeper's office, a pumpout and bins. It's twelve
minutes walk to Drumshanbo. |

Clarendon Lock is the only lock on the Boyle River between the confluence with the Shannon and Lough Key. Can be a strong sideways push from the weir when approaching from downstream.

The Albert Lock sits at the southern end of the Jamestown Cut which bypasses the unnavigable stretch of river between Drumsna and Jamestown.

High air draught boats will require the lifting bridge to be raised when passing up or downstream from Roosky. Lock keeper is also the bridge keeper.

Tarmonbarry Lifting Bridge

The same type of bridge as Roosky, this bridge is located immediately upstream of
the lock, and is operated by the Tarmonbarry Lock Keepers. When coming from upstream,
you can contact the lock either by phone, if you have a cell phone on board, or by
mooring at the jetty above the bridge and walking down to the lock. In the summer
months, you will get through by just waiting for the next lock-full of boats heading
upstream.

One of the deeper drops, Tarmonbarry is subject to strong weir pull above the lock, and usually strong wind below the lock. High boats will also require the bridge to be lifted.

Sitting at the entrance to the Camlin river, Clondra is a fairly tight
little lock and relatively little used.

Richmond lock controls the entrance to Richmond Harbour from the Camlin River, and the defunct Royal Canal.

A large lock chamber, but care is required when approaching from either side, as the neighbouring weir has strong course deviating effects in spite of shuttering.

A large lock chamber - the first lock upstream from Lough Derg. No particular hazards or problems here, apart from minimal mooring.

Portumna Swing Bridge

Effectively delimiting the northern tip of Lough Derg, Portumna Bridge is not
negotiable by any craft with air draft of anything more than a rowboat. The
bridge does not open by request, but rather at
fixed times of day.

Below the southern limit of navigation for hire boats, Ardnacrusha is a mind blowing lock experience. With two lock chambers providing a combined drop of a hundred feet, it takes some nerve to put your expensive cruiser through it. The river is tidal below Ardnacrusha.
