For many years we have taken part in charity events in an effort to raise funding for much needed causes around Ireland as part of the DAA charity programme which has raised over 1.5 million euro since inception in 2009. Our greatest achievement to date has been to row the entire navigable length of the River Shannon in less than 3 days which has never been achieved by any other team. A key part of this challenge was the fantastic help and support by the IWAI and its members. Not only did the association help to sponsor the event they turned out in numbers and offered their support and advice on the water which was an unbelievable gesture of kindness. The branches of Carrick, Athlone and Lough Derg were of great assistance to us and names such as Noel Griffin, Conor Meegan, Martin Donnelly, Kevin Clabby, Dave McCabe, Sam Herraghty, Jim Reenan, Keith Rowe and Carmel Meegan will never be forgotten at our club as without their help we would simply not have been able to attempt such a mammoth task. I’m glad to say that we made great friends during those three unforgettable days in June 2013. This year we’re off again and this time we intend to become the first crew to ever row a boat from Ireland to France which is in aid of Temple St. Children’s Hospital, Parkinson’s Ireland and The Diabetes Unit at Our Lady’s Hospital, Crumlin. Leaving from Dunmore East of the 27th of May we intend to make land fall at Landeda, Brittany 62hrs later. The event is being called ‘ENDEAVOAR’ and our website is www.endeavoar.ie , there is a facility on this page to donate to these charities by clicking on the DONATE button and there is also a text donation line which allows the public to donate directly by texting OCEAN to 50300 for €2. We have been kindly offered two support boats from local skippers which are again a sign that boat owners in this country are without doubt a very special breed of people. Any assistance that you could give us by way of spreading the word to your members about this event would be very much appreciated.
For members who are boat ready to start the new season, we have been notified by IWAI Boyle River that there will be a gathering on Cootehall Quay wall on Sunday 15th March to celebrate St Patricks Day. There is also a gathering and static boat display taking place on St Patrick’s Day in Carrick on Shannon, as part of the festivities from 12noon to 3pm. Decorated boats can moor raft style along the quays by Moonriver and join in the festivities.
