Charts Special Interest Group (CSIG)
IWAI Members of the Charts Special Interest Group (CSIG) are working together to deliver a new set of charts for the rivers, lakes and canals of Ireland with the aim of making the waterways safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
Achieving this goal involves carrying out depth surveys, analysing data, adding location knowledge and then producing charts from the resulting information. These charts will be available in both paper and electronic format.
The CSIG is a cooperative of members from all branches of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland (IWAI). The CSIG also collaborates with others who are interested in what we are doing, including archaeologists, historians, rescue services, sub-aqua groups, leisure users and communities along the waterways.
Work began with one small team in 2011 and has since expanded to include several teams surveying different waterways or gathering information. The diverse skills required are passed on to new members at training and practical sessions. Finance to underwrite this endeavour comes from our members and from several branches of the IWAI. As of 2016, we are now into the fourth year of what might be a ten-year programme and have released our first charts to a Test Group with several update in 2016.
