08-May-12 We have a cleaning gig with a group of Transition Year canoeists from Ballyfermot Youth Svcs between Locks 7 and 8 next Tuesday from 10 to 3, so it might be nice if we could get it out there for that. This opportunity arose out of the Canal Info Evening at Suir Rd last week and given the impending passage of boats into the Rally, the fact that this group actually take stuff out of the water, rather than just from the banks (suits their canoeing activities) and that we might get a nice pic for the next IWN, anyone available to drop by on the day would be well appreciated ...!

This is just the second year that its possible for boats to come to Dublin via the Royal Canal since its closure in 1960.  We welcome all who make the trip from the Erne, the Shannon, the Barrow, the Royal and the Grand Canal in addition to our coastal visitors..

Some of you who come in via one canal may return via the other.  If you do this, you're taking up our Green & Silver Challenge -  see here for more details

If you're thinking of joining the rally, contact Peter Johnson on  087 2301494 or Mick Kinahan on 086 8150483 or contact the Dublin Branch Rally committee by clicking here.  See Terms & Conditions below.

Download the Main Rally Entry form and return to the address on the form.

All dates below are provisional and subject to change

Liffey Cruise
Join us on our Liffey Cruise
Sadly, we've no need this year for our guide to Navigating the Liffey (intended to assist Dublin Rally participants)

Unfortunately tidal conditions will not permit us to get up to Islandbridge this year.  The Liffey is also blocked just east of O'Connell Bridge where a new bridge is being constructed (see photo at right).

Lock down into the Liffey at 10am;
Lock back up to GCD at 14:30.

We recommend you have a good look at the Dublin City Moorings 2008 handbook - it contains details of Dublin Port radio, Small Craft (Leisure) regulations and Tide Tables.
Also check www.dublinport.ie for their 2008 Leisure Craft Guidelines.

Film Double Bill

at The Lir Academy beside the "Box in the docks"
Doors open 19:00
Film show starts 20:00

Hark launched at North Wall, proceeded down the Royal Canal to Tarmonbarry, 8 April - 11 April 1955. It went up to the North Shannon and then south to Dromineer 1955
Upstream again to Shannon Harbour in October 1955, to Dublin via Grand Canal, 28 October - 4 November 1955 and hauled out at North Wall for the winter.
Crew comprised: Douglas and Betty Heard, Barbara and Rory O'Hanlon, Vincent and Ruth Delany. The photograph above was taken by Ruth Delany.
The story of the journey is written up in written up in the book Ireland's Royal Canal, published in 2010 (available from the IWAI shop).
Film Double Bill  - at The Lir Academy. Doors open 19:00 fro Wine & Cheese, Film show starts 20:00 promptly!
Ruth Delany will present a film-show on the Voyager of the Hark.

Ruth was one of the crew of six, and the film, shot by Douglas Heard, documents Hark's voyage up the Royal Canal 1955 - the last boat to travel the canal before its reopening in 2010.  Some of this footage featured in the 2011 airing of Waterways with the Rambler and the voyage itself was written up in the book "Ireland's Royal Canal".
The footage is approx 40 minutes.

Ian Bath will also present a short film, shot in the '70s showing the state of the Royal Canal at that time, pre-restoration.

Those of you, who've read "Ireland's Royal Canal", may already have seen some "before" and "after" photos.  This promises to me most interesting, particularly to those of you who are planning or have completed a journey on the Royal canal.
The footage is approx 15 minutes.

In conjunction with our usual monthly branch meeting, the members of the IWAI Charts Special Interest Group (CSIG) will be introducing the fruits of their labours to date at the Dublin Branch meeting next monday .  They will demonstrate samples of the charts on OpenCPN and Memory-Map software, and show who they are, what they are doing, and what the next steps will be. You have to see these to believe them, so come along and see the first presentation. They will show you what you need to make them work, whether you have a laptop or tablet (eg, iPad), and how much these will cost.

The team has 22 members at present who are out collecting and collating data.  There is an opportunity to contribute too and the team will no-doubt explain how.
