The Big White Boat is gone!!!!!!!!
Barge arrived early this morning (34M I think) and took it in tow up the river. Apparently it is heading for Athlone.

Only one hogger on Meelick Quay now and a huge space available for visiting boats.

It would appear that the quay is not under WI control, so it will remain for as long as the owner wishes

By special request an update on the Big White Boat

The vessel is listing heavily and is ready to sink again
If you are travelling to Meelick over the Eeaster be wary of mooring alongside this vessel
The little white boat is also still here so very little wall room avalible when you add the 60 odd feet of the J&M
You are welcome to come alonside the J&M

With low water levels the Old Quay can be shallow

Its a trawler alright its been on Derg a long time now the guy who owns it also keeps a large wooden open boat in Scarriff in the winter, it can be seen at various times either tied to the pier in Toumgreaney , Mountshannon or Drommann.

Imraam has been in Droman for about 15 years according to the owner a guy from Mountshannon said to me when I asked that the harbour was "his" W.I know who he is but just seem to let him be probably because he's local.

On Derg the dog's in the streets know who the hoggers are so one assumes WI do to especially as they are their customers for winter mooring, Irish logic for you.

No. One is a cruiser. The other I suspect was a Trawler in a previous life I would love to know how it got to Dromaan. If it came up through Limerick, the silting cannot have been too bad :)

Hi Peter.
Are the big brothers also sailing yachts?

I've find Imraam's permanent presence in Dromaan (apart from a brief visit to Mountshannon last season - I think) annoying.

It occupies a (the) prime spot to port as you enter the harbour.

Beats me why WI cannot warp her over to the N corner (Williamstown side) out of the way.

I didn't originally read this thread, but have just done so. Boy, thats some boat to be left abandoned. Bound to be worth something to an old retired man like me to phooter at. Although frankly this old retired man has at least 10 years of phootering laid out ahead of him, all those unfinished projects from the last 40 years..

A cynic would suggest that the note was intended to play for time.

Why (I don't know the area) would it be so difficult to move the boat - surely a boat that size would have powerful engines?

WI are being remarkably tolerant...

Another puzzle for me is why it keeps sinking?
Rain etc?
No significant frost this winter so hardly a through hull fitting?

Hi John.

Well, putting your name and telephone no. up is a brave move. Up to then one could remain "invisible". There can be no way that her engines are serviceable at this stage. After so many sinkings and near sinkings, I'm sure they are scrapped. The boat is basically an empty shell. I've been contradicted before, but I still maintain that the size and weight of her precludes any amateur attempt at towing against the current in the winter.

As I mentioned, I no longer claim to know any of the background or circumstances of the owner. There may well be very good reasons why it hasn't been attended to. It could well be that they deserve our sympathy?

That is that large steel boat that went down winter 2009 or 2010 it look
like its going again unfortunately it not deep enough at Meelick Quay for it
to sink completely and allow others to use the area that has been tied up
their for the last 6 or 7 years to my memory.

Hi Donal,

I'm not at all surprised. When I last looked at it early October it was low in the water and listing. I guessed it was only a matter of time before the bottom beckoned. I'm with John on this one. After remembering the now annual charade that this boat attracts, I thought, what's the point of reporting it? If it sits there on the bottom for long enough, W.I. may be embarrassed into moving it. They clearly know who owns it. Or at least, his "BROTHER" 8-)

Gerry burke went up today, he was heading for the harbour
He runs with a 120hp I think

I am sitting at meelick for to let the flow ease, like you I only run with 60hp

Shannon grove is one thing, coming to a dead stop in the center of banagher bridge is an other

The mid shannon level has dropped a bit over the past 24h so mabe the flow will ease soon

Donal, You just don't want to have that peaceful spot all to yourself and so that you wont have to share those apple tarts. Sure everybody knows you can moor outside a barge and ditto the large white boat. Mind you, those ropes must be fairly thin by now.
What was the flow like coming up? I'm thinking of heading to SH to have some more work done.
Would 60 horses and a cast iron prop make it through Shannon Grove?

Arrived at Meelick for my summer season and what do I see, Yep a big white boat
The ropes are a year older and it is sitting a little lower in the water other than that all is normal for this vessel
As posted previously the big white boat takes up quarter of the Quay, the J&M takes up half the quay and that only leaves the final quarter for the rest of ye.

The weather is great with a good flow on the river, the birds are nesting and the white boat men are nowhere to be seen. One jet boat did pass but thats probably the new power boat mob out and about

yep we did, but all is returning to normal at Meelick

Big white boat arrived four years ago and moored to the quay, I looked at it arriving

Four years after it arrives it sinks.

Within days it is refloated, and we all hoped it would be moved

But it looks like four more years

and people get excited over a three day rule ??

But I supose its a matter of WI verses the Co Co and the boat waits until it sinks again

Still in Meelick, tied to the quay. Half full of water. Who knows what damage was done by pollution? Oil has been washed downstream, and dead bodies don't last long on the banks of the Shannon!!

Is it still at Meelick Quay? Was there significant pollution by the time
it was refloated?
