Dimitri and Oscar, Mary and me... and "Arthur"!

What a way to start the new boating season!

Boating is one of my major pastimes/hobbies...but it is not the only one. Amongst other things I also dabble in photography, manage my wine collection, play bridge regularly (and in the past seriously!).

But probably the interest of longest-standing has been my love of Film Music. It started when I was circa 14 years of age when my young sister gave me a copy of an EP (Extended Play or mini LP) of the music that Jerome Moross wrote for the movie 'The Big Country'. And I have been collecting soundtracks ever since. When I returned to Ireland in 1975, after a five year working stint in London, I had alreay amassed a collection of some 1500 soundtracks or film-music related LP's. And the CD collection is now even larger than that of the now obsolete vinyl...

So, I hear you ask...what has this got to do with boating, "Arthur", or anything else related to what goes on in this forum...

Well, last weekend we took "Arthur" on her maiden cruise of the new boating season. It was a fantastic couple of days...and it kicked off with something that was truly memorable for me.... X(

I was reared in the cinema, literally. I remember having to wind the reel with a pencil when the drive belt broke. Otherwise the film would have ended up on the floor. I still have one of the old projectors,a 16mm Bell and Howell.I could show a film before I was ten. The panic set in when the film broke. The boos started if you hadn't it fixed in two minutes. Learning to splice the film was the hardest part.

Your old vinyl of course can be transferred to cd .USB turntables turn up occassionally on Aldi or[much dearer]in powerCity. Mind you I still love vinyl. There's nothing like it for a proper sound, not that dull cd or ipod ,no top or bottom kinda music.

pJ
