New Wreck outside GCD Sea Lock.

Call this bit of a Marine Notice or somesuch...!!

There's a "new" sunken vessel just in front of the old one on the left hand side heading out from Buckingham Lock onto the Liffey. Pictures below were taken at 14.50 approx with Low Tide due at 15.34 (0.9m). For anyone passing through over the summer, you might also note the extent of the Dodder mudbank on the right hand side. Dont forget this extends well to the left, just below the surface. The "stick" (center of pic 1) is a marker of some description, and were I bringing 31B (12'9" wide, 3'4"deep over full width) in or out, I would be driving over it. It goes under but has always magically popped back up....well, so far anyway...!! No info from WI as yet as I only noticed this today while out gallavanting in GCD with the Newry Branch.

Re: New Wreck outside GCD Sea Lock.

Hi Mick, Ah I do "get it", but it's just some "projects" seem tangible, whereas others seem bottomless pits for time and money with no realistic end (ie beyond realistic restoration), sometimes resulting in eventual abandonment. The boat in the pic looks more of the latter but I could be wrong. I construct flying scale model aircraft from scratch (ie from drawings not kits) and they consume humongous amounts of time even though they are only 1/4 or 1/5 scale (eg.T6, B25, etc). BUT, something the size of a boat is on an altogether different scale of undertaking!

Some
people do actually enjoy fixing up manky ould boats. I even know one or
two who have no interest whatsoever in boating, just the fixing up bit.
Soon as it's done, its sold on and another project is acquired. No
different really from the "life sentence" that makes one own a boat, or
follow rugby or bate a little white ball around a very big lawn or bate your
way across old canals...!!

The older wreck is there a "good" while. Pretty sure I passed it in 2003,
though not sure if it was still floating or not.

M(W&W)F

I have a 3 in the digger, but not available as shes still needed as a digger! There was one on dungdeal a few months ago, very small money, but don't remember where. Alun

I would direct anyone interested in such a project to......(Now see what you've started Joe, I'm already bored writing this reply...LOL)....Mark Clarke, Dockmaster, GCD, in the first instance. Although the aforementioned vessel is outside of Waterway Ireland's jurisdiction, I believe that Mr Clarke has been in contact with Dublin Port, to ascertain their intentions with regard to the vessel, however, given that the vessel only came to grief very recently, it is doubtful as to whether Dublin Port will have taken "ownership" as yet.
I must also point out that as winter ends on 31st January and it is now 21st February, it may in fact be more correct to consider this a Spring Project.

Your 'umble servant....!!

Mick Farrell,
PRO
Dublin Branch.

Plans were already in the pipeline to remove the old wreck before the Tall Ships arrive. In the meantime, Mark reckons that while it wont close the sea lock, it will reduce the window for crossing by maybe 30 to 60 minutes which will have to be factored into Rally plans especially. We had been looking at the idea of "overnighting" boats in Spencer anyway, to reduce the rush on bridge lift days, and it now looks as if this may become a necessity.

Mick Farrell
PRO
Dublin Branch.
