> Topic 1964 Shannon Rally (photos) Posted by Michael Slevin
Folks, I'm delighted to showcase another set of quality photos in our Photo Archive. Jeff Brownlee participated in the Shannon Rally in 1964. His photos document the voyage from Ringsend to Carrick-on-Shannon & Lough Key. I'm sure they will bring back very happy memories for many, touched with the sadness of seeing friends and family that are no longer with us. Any help in identifying individuals or boats is appreciated, either by sending information to "pics AT iwai.ie" or here on the forum. I've enlarged some parts of some photos. Naturally if you spot yourself or are interested in a particular photo, we can supply you with a higher resolution version. You'll note that some of the 35mm slides have been attacked by mildew - we've made no attempt to clean them other than a light blow with an air bulb. I won't point out my favourite photo - I'll let you decide, but there is a boat on slide 36 to make every young boy out there very jealous. Thunderbirds are go! There are some people identifiable with cine cameras. It would be good to identify who they are and perhaps trace the film. All assistance appreciated. And of course, we welcome similar photos. Finally, Jeff's photos of the 1964 Shannon Rally can be found at [www.iwai.ie] Many thanks Jeff for sharing them with us. Michael Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 13/05/2010 22:14 by Michael Slevin.
A wonderful trip down memory lane. Brownlee Bros were agents for Pilot ??brand radios in the late 50s and 60s . I remeber the rep calling to see my father who dealt in radios and later tvs. My memory was that it was Jeff Brownlee ,but I cant be sure as I was very young. Great work Michael. PjN
Noel,At the prizegiving ,there is a man using a small cine camera. If he was identified ,then he or his family might still have the film. Pj OOps ,I see Michael made that same point in his initial posting..[Mind you I find with kids one has to repeat things over and over to sink in. Seems to be the case with Garmins too.Yawn, yawn, ]Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 13/05/2010 23:44 by pj norris.

You are on the money there PJ see extract below. For more see [www.cloneyaudio.com] Paddy Cloney Audio is one of Ireland's oldest established Hi-Fi, Home Cinema and Custom Installation businesses. But the story of Cloney Audio goes back even further than the company itself. In the early sixties, a young Noel Cloney started his first job in the audio business at Brownlee Brothers while also studying electronics by night at Kevin Street College. This was back in the days when trade restrictions meant that selling in Ireland frequently required a parallel manufacturing presence. And so it was that Noel began his career in the test department at Brownlee Brothers in Molesworth Street, donning his white coat to grade and match the transistors for Brownlee's TR80 Pilot Radio. Imagine his surprise when he ended up on the assembly line and moving later to quality control.
Fantastic, You are bringing me back. I remember one time our house, was filled with radios. Thay were the HMV curved shape and I think they were about £30 [pounds retai] My father put a couple in the car everyday and sold them door to door in rural Co.Galway Of course he also would install a socket for the radio as well,on the spot. The money was collected in dribs and drabs. I remember well that rep,John Condron,A lovely man . He also did magic tricks for us kids. He came to collect his money once a month and always brought a bag of sweets. He loved my mother's brown bread and always got a loaf on leaving. Thanks Paddy. PjN
Thanks Michael & Jeff, They are brilliant photos and lije PJN they evoke happy memories for me. Also like PJN my father dealt with Brownlee Bros. for radios and parts back in the 60's. I have the list of entrants from 1964, but it's a bit tatty, so I will retype it in a word doc. and send it to you, it may help people to identify boats & people from the boat names or numbers. Unfortunately it will be two weeks before I can do it so bear with me please. Damien Delaney
Wonderful scenes of a bygone era. Thanks for posting such interesting photos. OceanFroggie

Yes that is the Chas Whitton with the Denham family aboard. Peter Denham was the first Hon Sec of IWAI. Folks, A chance encounter at the 9th lock on Saturday turned up the information that the boy in the red airboat "Hi-De-Hi" from 1964 was Simon Kennedy (Shane's brother) and that the hull was a converted float from a Supermarine Walrus. The photo features at [www.iwai.ie] Michael
Hi all. Jeff here who is new to the forum so excuse any cockups.Iam replying to all those lovely replys to my 1964 Shannon Boat Rally photos. I have been in the IWAI since 1962.My first boat was an 18ft boat named Sancta Maria (Rally No. 11) We travelled from Bulloch Harbour into the Grand Canal to join the rally in Athlone. Our first day we made Robertstown from the basin.I got sense and never travelled that distance again (26 locks I think). Your responce to the slides has been amaising and wonderful to see some of you remember Brownlee Bros.No I was not that rep who called on you as my company was Radionics which was started by my late farther George in 1947. (The year of the big snow). George worked in Brownlee Bros.before starting Radionics. I knew Noel Cloony when he worked inB.B.Was Noel the unfortunate who left B.B to set up his own company and then broke his leg? I would love a copy of the 1964 Rally list if and when it becomes available. I remember the Charles Whitten and Harklow on the rally. My present boat is a Horizon 43 which is similar to a Trader 44. The engines are 3208 V8 CATs which between then they can burn up to 40 gallons an hour. The up side is you have plenty of hot water. It was great meeting some of you while I was doing some lock work on the recent Dublin Rally. Jeff Brownlee Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
