> Topic Derg Branch - where were you today? Posted by John.Kinsella1
Hi all. LDYC keelboats were sailing in Dromineer Bay again today. Breakaway was on the water too. A beautiful day - bright sunshine, air temp about 10 C and a nice breeze. Where were you all? Sitting in a pub watching other people have fun (play rugby). Use it or lose it! When Yachting Branch get into power there will be changes I tell you. A €100/week tax on unused boats for a start. Members of the DERG BRANCH and The HBA were on a secret mission today. An MI6 Style operation under cover of dawn took place in the north of Derg this am. They weren't out enjoying themselves like some people. No ,I wasn't there. I had a lie in. I'm not a fanatic like some. Slept on my boat last night. First time for 2011. Yippee!. Pj
Quote:Hi PJ. Sorry but sleeping on your boat does not exempt you from the Yachting Branch Voluntary (till we take over the IWAI Exec) Levy on underused boats Please remit your €100 asap. Btw sleeping on your boat instead arguably reinforces the perception that Derg Branch is a bit ... auld? But what's wrong with that? If we can have a Cruising Club why not a Snoozing Club? John ![]()
Hi John, I agree with your attitude to PJ doing a 'sleepover' on his boat ( c'mon PJ get involved!) -real boaters don't have an off-season! A couple of pics of Derg branch etc. work parties today .
Quote: Dermot; once a yachtsman, always a yachtsman... So in fact you circumnavigated the lake (OK not Derg but who will check). Looks like free subs for 2011 for Cheetah - *head in hands* who the **** is actually going to pay for membership of Yachting Branch??? PJ's E100 wont go far - Hang on, it is levied weekly... sorted... ![]() John Hon Treasurer and Tax Collector - Yachting Branch

John, If you were in the inner circle, you might know what was going on today. Also ,last weekend the branch made an exporation of the Errina Canal. Imagine that, the new year has hardly wet it's head yet and Derg Branch members have had two work oriented outings. I don't see any other branch making any noises. How about it Boyle /Carrick branch. What about those canals at Rockingham. How about a few photos at least. PJ
Hi John. I know that some Derg Branch members were on Derg (Portumna to Killaloe) yesterday, and on exercise in Dromaneer at 9.30 am this morning. Busy this weekend with project work for a Ul course I'm doing so hope to be out next weekend though, might see you again. Enjoy the quiet lake without the tsunami makers ![]() Regards Andy Jordan
Lads, Ye're not proper boaters. Everybody knows that proper boaters start their boating after the Shannon Harbour rally and put the boat the bed Aug 31st. That's the way it used to be 25 years when I got my first boat. You would hardly meet a boat . In fact I bought Jangada around Easter 1986 . She had a berth in Killaloe then. Fot the first three weeks after I got her I hardly saw another boater much less speak to one. So I motored on up the lake and haven't been in Killaloe 10 times since. It's wonderful that the boating season is gradually becoming a year round activity. All we need now are a few more icebreakers like Arthur. PJ
Quote: HI PJ, I saw the sneaky deliberate "bed" references! The Snoozing Club strikes again! ![]() John Hon Treasurer and Tax Collector - Yachting Branch
Quote: Hi PJ.. Yes but - why not leave maintenance of the navigation to W.I.? Just step into boat, start engine, cast off warps, back out... Dum dum dum dum...... Arrive harbour after 15-30 minutes of tedium (unless a member of Yachting Branch).. Tie up.. Enjoy lunch.. Step back into boat, start engine, cast off warps, back out... Dum dum dum dum...... Arrive home harbour after 15-30 minutes of tedium (unless a member of Yachting Branch).. Tie up.. 'Tis easy... ![]() John Hon Treasurer and Tax Collector - Yachting Branch
John, WI have no interest in the Errina Canal. So a little thorn in the side may fester and eventually turn into a much larger boil on the neck. The other project is in cooperation with WI. Watch this space. I know yachties only sail round in circles. In a barge ,the journey is part of the experience. Otherwise one might just join the PBC and run over ducks. Pj
I'll be shot for saying this but the Errina hasn't a chance of getting financial support from WI given that a) the Ulster canal is the only major show in town for the foreseeable future, b) the cost benefit given that the Limerick navigation already exists, and c) the hire traffic that could have formed a tourism argument has all but vanished. It's a lovely idea, the concept of an easy to use 24x7 route to Limerick through two scenic villages with both airdraft and draft sufficient to accommodate today's larger cruisers. But, sadly I can't see one winning an economic argument. OceanFroggie Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 18/01/2011 08:56 by OceanFroggie.
Morning Noel, no, not coming out shooting (this time!) but there is another side to the story. Local efforts have created a fabulous river/canal bank walk and as shown in the pics, WI are attending to the lock stonework which is an important part of our heritage. These shots from 8th Jan. with more on Derg page. Joe.
Thanks for the pics Joe. Now a walk way has immense amenity value and financially doable even if boats don't pass by. OceanFroggie Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum. Online UsersGuests within the past 30 minutes:
