Noel,

The WI engineering staff covering the Eastern end of the canals and the
Barrow Line and River are very proactive when it comes to dredging.
They've done a brilliant job down the Barrow line over the last 5 or 6
winters. Its slow going, about 2 miles every winter, but the process tends
to get delayed as they can only dredge a quarter mile section at a go.
Why..?? Because of the fish..!!

Slippery customers those fishgrinning smiley

PJ asked what happened the fish in the Leeson St stretch - they electrocuted them!! Actually, that's a bit of an exageration - They stunned them with a mild electric shock and gathered them all up and relocated them to unaffected stretches. I think the plan is to reverse the procedure when the section is re-watered. The fish should be nicely cooked by the time they're finishedeye rolling smiley

Yes Peter, I've seen them do it during dredging down on the Barrow Line. A
crew comes out from the Central Fisheries Board, stuns them and lifts them
out when they go belly up. And 'yis thought it was only "foreign
nationals" who took all the fish out...LOL

If they dredge this well over the years as far as the Shannon, the canals indeed may become leisure user friendly, rather than just limited to expert enthusiasts. These photos are very encouraging for the future of canal navigation.

unfortunately not Noel, there will never be widespread dredging, Its a protected substance under the water and hazardous waste above it. Hence the cost of disposal is huge. Here and there is all we can hope for.

but SC GRP cruisers designed for inland or Coastal work should have little difficulty in doing the Grand/Royal experience. I can't wait to introduce Ida the the sport of 'inland contact sport'

for small boats maybe, but for single screw with no weed trap, its a difficult experience. Funnily the sports cruisers we like to give out about are actually easuly able to get up the canals and the outdrives can be raised and the boats draws little. But there are onePITA to drive anywhere slowly.

Dave,

I'm not sure thats entirely true. There are "contaminated waste" issues on the Dublin sections, but down on the Barrow Line the spoil was mostly used to rebuild the banks. It does beg the question though....if there is hazardous waste in the canals, why have WI been allowed to leave it there...??

Time for an update on the dredging. They seem to be way behind. In the latest IWN WI said they would be dredging C4, C5 and C6. They'll only get C5 done at this rate.

View from Leeson St. No longer dry - a good channel there now.

View back to lock at Leeson St. The landing jetty is being moved to other bank. To make way for new cycle path?

Long view back to Leeson St. New channel is over 3ft deeper.

Temporary footbridge while the cycle path works are ongoing at lane above Leeson St.

Oops. Is this intentional?

And again - now get out of that.

Just making sure it's deep enough. Good indication of what's been taken out.

New cycle lane at Wilton Tce. (Mespil). This is nearly complete and runs from Grand Canal St. to Portabello.

So that's who's paying for the job.

WI dredging Portabello Bridge.

The Grand Canal Monster

If they ensure this depth for the entire canal it may become useable by "ordinary" boaters as opposed to just seasoned stalwarts prepared to do battle with all the rubbish and underwater obstructions. Hope it continues.
