AJ's Royal Canal Life Posted by AJ Vosse
Hi All, Today's blog post covers my walk from the foot bridge west of Nead's Bridge... that favourite spot of MF & 31B... all the way into Mullingar. It was a good walk... apart from the weather. There is much history in the area so I want to go back and have another look. I hope you enjoy this section as well... don't forget to go over to my 'Royal Canal Life' page on the blog to look at some of the other walks... that's if your up for my version of events. ![]() Cheers, AJ aka Vossie PS: The next psot... Mullingar Harbour to the Ballinea Bridges will follow in the next few days... [ouchmybackhurts.wordpress.com]
Hi All, You can now read the post detailing the section between Mullingar Harbour and the Ballinea Bridges... Today I'll be off trying to get from the bridges to where Joe has 4E moored... Abbeyshrule... quite some distance to go in one day! Please stop for a chat if you should be passing that way... Cheers for now, enjoy your weekend, ![]() Vossie aka AJ [ouchmybackhurts.wordpress.com]
Hi All, More walking tales to keep you occupied... that's if you're that way inclined. ![]() Today's blog post covers the longish section from the Ballinea Bridges to Abbeyshrule... about 13 miles. So... be warned... it's quite a long read... have your refreashments at the ready... So long... Vossie aka AJ ![]() [ouchmybackhurts.wordpress.com]
Just to prove I'm not totally Royal Canal biased... Barge on the Barrow... ![]() Bagenalstown Lock... ![]()
To answer your question about the water levels... they seem as low as the Long Level on the RC... have a look-see at the spill weir above the lock... not much water has gone over there in a while... As for Moneybags... not familiar with him/her... please introduce me... I could do with some of the contents of said bags... [ouchmybackhurts.wordpress.com]
Hi All, I'm a little short on RC walking news so I'm being slightly bold and inviting you over to the blog for a look-see at another tale... well, the start of another tale. I will say that boats, 2 in particular, play very important parts in the development and outcome of that little saga... but that's for the future. As for my RC walks... let's hope the weather is a little kinder in the next few weeks so I can go off and complete the walks without getting too wet and cold... Cheers for now, happy reading... Vossie aka AJ ![]() [ouchmybackhurts.wordpress.com] PS - I'll feature a few boats again on Monday or Tuesday... ![]() PSS - Don't forget to go over to the Royal Canal Life page... there you can find all the summer's RC action on one page... enjoy...
Hi All, Thanks to Mick Farrell for asking me down to Louisa Bridge to join in with the collection of building material for a quick BBQ... fun was had by all... as can be seen over on Mick's work party post and on my blog entry today... Cheers, AJ aka Vossie [ouchmybackhurts.wordpress.com] PS - Hold thumbs the weather improves a bit this next weekend... I have to get my RC walk completed soon... before the snow arrives ![]()
Hi All, Just a quick note to say I've not given up on my quest to reach the Shannon... managed to do Abbeyshrule to Lock 40 yesterday. I'll have the post done by Wednesday or Thursday... In the meantime... how about visiting a fellow blogger's site to have a look at what our friends across the pond were up to not so long ago... Have fun, AJ aka Vossie ![]() [hallysann.wordpress.com]
Thanks Mick, There's still life in me yet... and out on the canal... ![]() I looked longingly toward the north west... just past Lock 40... ![]() PS - I'm trying to plan for including the Longford Branch... will I be able to walk the whole length or is the towpath closed to the public?
I think it is Vossie, but I'm not certain. I could only get up the first 100 ft or so...!! M(W&W)F
Hi Vosse Stephen and I walked it a few times between 2009 and 2010. With good boots it should present no difficulty. We haven't been there yet in 2011 and probably won't be, at this rate, but I can't see why it should be any different now! We did it in runners (him) and sandals (me), but we did it on good weather days and took it in stages suitable for his then 5 year-old legs. There are ample opportunities to cross the canal and return on the opposite bank, or gain access to the road and return that way, which makes it very family friendly for walking, though obviously that'll be of little relevance to you! Hope that helps Duncan
Someone else recommended this book some time back and I got it on that recommendation. ISTR it was out of print. and it cost me a lot more than ?7 but well worth it as I find cycling the canals an enjoyable and not too strenuous way of getting exercise. Hi All, I have made it to the Shannon... well, to Richmond Harbour and Lock 46... ![]() Good to see old friend Float 3 waiting for me... could I not bring her back this way? Or... could I not break free and really get to the Shannon! ![]() Give me a week or so to complete all the posts... I should have Lock Abbeyshrule to Lock 40 done and posted by the weekend... in the meantime, thanks again for your support and encouragement. See you soon... along the Grand?
