Wow! Rockingham will never be the same again! A little bit sad, really, but the old jetties were really past their best, so this is to be welcomed. At least it isn't a submarine pen. It looks as though it will still be a bit exposed when the wind is from the wrong direction. The conventional advice was to seek shelter at Drumaans Island, but if all those floating pontoons are full of boats when the need arises, there won't be room for them all to hide there. Might make for some interesting races... Duncan
Quote: Eyesore Kieran...how could that possibly be...?? They're lovely shiny new jetties. Everybody knows that only rusty old projects are eyesores. Sure if its new and shiny it has to be good....does'nt it....??? M(W&W)F ![]()
Quote: My initial reaction purely from seeing Rich's photo was similar. It looks massive. As Rich's photo didn't display on the forum I've resized it and reposted it below. The jetties look out of scale. I would have thought jetties close into the shore line would blend in better. But it difficult to tell from a photo. Photo Richard Whitla OceanFroggie
Well it must have been through a planning application process and granted permission. The horse has long left the stable. "All Changed, changed utterly. A terrible beauty is born." It will be interesting to look back in a few years time and then asses if it was more a positive than not. OceanFroggie Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/12/2011 07:19 by OceanFroggie.
The Lough Key development went through a full planning application. It was supported by the CoS branch of the IWAI. Individuals who were against the proposed development at that time could have exercised they statutory right and availed of due process. I for one support this development. The substantially increased mooring capacity will allow easy access to moor whether you have a conventional cruiser or a barge at the focal point of Lough Key. The facility will support large rallies without breaking up the fleet. The support land side facilities will also be an asset to boaters. Well done to WI with continued capital investment to improve our waterway. Kieran,Isn't that castle totally overgrown anyhow. Sure you can hardly see it. Derg Branch, went the appeal route in Terryglass when WI wouldn't compromise on their plans . They were then directed to talk to the branch and had to accept changes. Perhaps an opportunity lost on Key. It does look very bare now,but with a few long term liveaboards and hoggers, when the washing is hanging out, it'll be grand. PJ
Another subject being dragged into the Hogger domain???? It's a wonder Enda hasn't blamed them on the economy as he would get plenty of believers on this site-if WI are providing facilities for the waterway user's they should be commended not lambasted for something that MAY happen and many places on the waterway would benefit from any efforts to encourage people to visit. We should possibly try an advise WI on how best to utilise an area but a poor upgrade is better than no upgrade. Mick
Fair enough, Carrick branch supported this development. I am entitled to my opinion as well as you and the Carrick branch. I am merely saying it should have been placed around the corner in the next bay, beside the concrete jetties. Not blocking the beautiful view of the castle and lake as seen from the carpark location. We the boat owners do not have any entitlement to have the view to ourselves from our white or ivory plastic boats while blocking the view to everyone else from the shoreline. Would,nt you think some lesson would have been learned from the monstrosity that is Moylurg Tower. Kieran Walsh
This is on Roscommon coco website. 8. The proposed development shall be used for the mooring of river and lake craft only. The facility shall not be used for the facilitation of power or speed boating. This is condition no 8 of the planning consent. What does it mean? No spedboats, jetskis etc? WOW!!!!!! So no Powerboat Club and leave the speedboats at home. PJ
