I see the dwelling part is described in a counter estate agent manner as being 'deceptively small'

I think the Castle was the game keepers residence in the long distant past A small house built along the back wall in a small open courtyard with stairway access up into one of the towers. The small living accomodation would have been totally overshadowed by the imposing high walls. The only way to see out was through the entrance gates which overlook the lake, there being no outside windows in the Castle/dwelling other than windows onto the courtyard We "found " this many years ago having seen it on an old chart of the lake. Lough Key used to be nice. Speaking personally I hate what has happened to the place. The new jetties will give much needed moorings . I'll wait and see what they look like.
I've just checked an old guide. It says all fixed bridges have 12 ft headroom at normal levels. It doesn't say over what width. You should be ok.

If you walk up the turning for the organic grower on the left, just before the Knockvicker bridge and traveling from boyle, and continue past the polytunnels you can walk through a mixture of woodlands and bog. There is a series of paths through out the area and will lead you all the way to the forest park if you like long walks. If you keep to the path along the shore line you will come to the castle nestling in the trees. They have cleared a lot of the scrub and woody weed growth recently along the shore so you get a great view of the lake now on the walk. I met an woman walking there last year and she told me it was owned and they were making it into a state of the art sound studio for recording bands to rent. Philip.

Hi Joseph, we have had 2 barges tied nose on to the small jetty at the land side of the island. Stern anchor to hold position. Don't know what kind of boat you have, but there is good water there up to the jetty, I draw 3'6" across 13 ft, but only about 2 ft at the bow. The back end hanging out is exposed to a run from the lake, so pick your day. Les 41M

Called into forest park yesterday to check on developments. Floating jetties now appear to be fully installed - awaiting services and access ramps. While I was there, there was a stiff northerly wind blowing with approx 2ft waves crashing onto the floating breakwater. But on the other side...calm water! Must admit to being surprised at how effective it was. Shower block also finished and awaiting internal fit-out. Some work also going on beside the slipway. Not sure what is happening here (perhaps widening it?). Due to the positioning of the jetty access ramps, the old stone jetty will no longer be accessible to cruisers (but may be to small boats if they can fit below them). Looking forward to seeing it completed. WI notice gives 31st Jan as end-of-works date. Rich COOL BLUE

Rich Thanks for the update. I too am looking forward to the completion of the works. It is a very welcome development which will probably see me in Lough Key more often. All I have to do is fit my new VHF radio for next season. Hope I remember what I need to know.  John Geary (Rose - E - Belle)

Sugar, looks a bit scary for a barge broadside to the incoming waves despite the floating breakwater. These breakwaters are worse than useless, having experienced one in Garrykennedy, when after a large power cruiser passed at the far side of the lake, and the wash finally hit, one couldn't stand on the jetties behind the breakwater, and the boats were rolling unbelieveably. Any kids or wrinkleys would not have stood a chance. Fortunately there was only 2 of us there as everyone else was up at a Branch event. Markie, if you are lurking, you remember it I am sure. Can someone please tell WI that these breakwaters DO NOT WORK, except in the lightest of winds. Having said that, it looks to me like they have made the best possible design, given the location, and doesn't look too intrusive to me. But I thought there would be more berths, looks like about 28 including the outside ones. Roll on the summer. Les 41M

Les I agree with you in relation to Garry Kennedy floating breakwater when strong NW or N wind blowing. There is a long fetch on Lough Derg. However Lough key is quite small and they might work there better given limited fetch and prevailing winds. Time will tell. I understand originally GK was going to have a solid breakwater, but local opposition including angling interests caused a redesign. A pity because WI did a superb job on the pier which has become a popular local walking amenity. Had it been longer better protection both visually and weather wise could have been achieved. Fully agree with you Noel, as you say, time will tell, but past experience says it gets pretty rough at Rockingham in a blow...and sure we'll find out for sure soon enough, and it is brilliant that WI are still providing such great amenities. Long may it last.. Les 41M
