Shannon Harbour Dry Dock closed NO ACROWS Posted by pjnorris1
Hi Les Welcome to the gang. You're a little late in joining, as I've been of that opinion about H&S people for many years now, as have most of my professional aqcuaintances. Not suggesting it was the right thing to do, but NONE of the safety devices on any of the machinery in the boat factory was operational. We all knew we were dealing with something that would quite happily munch through human flesh and were careful when using machinery. There were NO accidents involving machinery the whole time I worked there! A H&S inspection would have closed us down immediately! I believe there's a sound basis for the belief that making things "idiot proof" entices idiots to test them! This in turn undermines my faith in the usefulness of H&S officialdom, which I think is responsible (albeit indirectly) for an INCREASE in industrial accidents. Of course, this is a self justifying trait. If somebody got hurt, whatever they were doing obviously wasn't safe and should be prohibited until a proper H&S assessment has been carried out and the process made safe. However, I feel the time is approaching when common sense is going to prevail, as the natural conclusion of the H&S proliferation will be a ban on every conceivable activity that might be construed as potentially dangerous, including putting one foot in front of another. This is obviously never going to happen, as it's WAY beyond the line. So, just exactly where is the line? How much of our liberty will we allow the H&S bullies to take before we stop them? I don't have any answers, other than taking responsibility, as far as possible, for my own safety. I'm open to suggestions... Duncan
Ah, that's a bit strong, Noel. While the drydock is operational it is available to all, provided they pay the canal permit fee and are willing to join the queue! I have grave reservations with the idea that state services should be withdrawn because commercial enterprises are providing similar services. It smells of brown envelope! Duncan
Unfortunately the State is not permitted to provide subsidised facilities in competition to privately funded ventures under EU law. I voted against all EU treaties. So, now that we have privately operated buses, we must forthwith abolish BUS Eireann? Privately run roads, we must immediately close all pre-existing state owned and maintained competing roads? How about the Natural History Museum? Lots of privately owned museums around, charging for admission! Somehow, without actually reading it myself, Ewan, I rather suspect you've missed a "Grandfather" clause, preventing the removal of pre-existing facilities when commercial entities provide similar facilities. If such a clause is NOT present, then it really stinks. Assuming there IS such a clause, then I strongly suspect SH's 200 years comfortably predates the nearest current commercial enterprise offering haul outs, which I suspect is Portaneena and hasn't reached it's first century yet! Then there's the whole definition of "subsidised", which I think is a bit of a stretch, given the fact that WI don't actually operate the dock, or provide any services to it. They maintain it, for sure (after a fashion!), which they are required to do as part of the heritage and infrastructure of the navigation, but that's it, or so it used to be. Are they now providing staff and equipment and/or carrying out repairs to vessels in the drydock and restricting access by non WI contractors?
Les has found alternate facilities and happy to report there is a dry dock for everybody in the audience - just as long as they can speak "vit a foreign aksent, Ja" ![]() i40M's new dry dock home. Has an iDock app with a manually operated iGate and automatic iRust syncing. The crane of left of shot is used for loading WD40 canisters. ![]() OceanFroggie
Hi Paul. Ah right so. Mix and match, whatever gets the job done easiest. NoelOceanFroggie

Hi Michael No, that's actually not what I experienced. I was in the process of typing a message, got distracted by something on tv for long enough for the screen saver to operate and when I moved the mouse to look at the message again... there it wasn't, exactly as I hadn't left it! I don't know how, but occasionally that happens and I have to type a message again. Lately, something new has happened, twice now, and an unfinished email has been whisked away and sent without my wishing it, or knowingly having done anything that might have caused it. I must remember to NEVER type anything in anger, in case I think better of it but it goes anyway! Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Or know what's causing it? Thanks Duncan
Hi Paul I'm presently living through the aftermath of a bad experience with Dell. I still don't have the laptop I ordered and the label says "Centrino" when what's fitted is "Core2Duo". It crashes frequently, runs disk check once a week, or so, sometimes fails to power down, or boot up and is generally a right pain in the proverbial. Thankfully, old age beckons and I'll feel justified in looking for a new one (not a Dell) in a year, or so. My Aldi PCs never gave any of these problems, but they are rather awkward to use in the drivers seat of a car. I still have to resort to them sometimes, when the Dell refuses to cooperate with my rs232 dongle. A 1990s Micra looks FULL with a mini tower PC, 14" monitor, keyboard and mouse set up inside it;-) Duncan
