They're called 'General Paints'

Have you considered bitumen for the hull, Donal ? About 65 Euro for 5 gals. Lovely and black, sticks to pretty much everything (including white plastic tied alongside...LOL). The hull is likely to take a lot of rubs if you base it on the canal, so keep it cheap and easily touched up.

Hi Donal

Are you sure the hull is aluminium?
That would be unlikely to be left abandoned, given the value of it, I would have thought.
Galvanised would be more likely. Either will readily shed paint, unless the correct etch primer has been used and even then you sometimes find a patch that becomes a blister, when the job's finished. I think it may be fingerprints not correctly cleaned off, but have never been able to get proof.
In any case, scrupulous cleanliness is vital for painting such metals with conventional paints.
As Mick says, bitumen will stick to pretty much anything and is easily touched up, when the need arises. Not very elegant, however and will stick to anything else that rubs against it, including your fenders, ropes, clothes and any neighbouring vessel that gets close enough to share a fender.
Considering how easily it rubs off wherever it's supposed to be, it's quite astonishing how hard it is to remove from everywhere else!
Consider carefully before using it, because it's not easy to go back and it will have a noticeable effect on your popularity among non-black-boat owners!
Did you find any reason why she was on the bottom?
Or was it simply neglect?

Fixed the wonky door on sundowner and spent time rooting around familiarising my self where everything is etc poxy evening though! Does anyone know the history of either boat? Sundowner just has a brass plate built by N H Fryer, queniborough , Leicester . Other than that nothing , beal na blath I remember from 90s but no idea of age or original purpose before being a cruiser ! (beal na blath ! I know sundowner was an ex lifeboat goodness knows what ship it came off?)Any info appreciated! Donal

Good on you, Donal.
As soon as you feel the enthusiasm beginning to ebb, you will shout for support, won't you?
I'm itching to have a nose...
Meanwhile, keep riding the wave of euphoria.
All the best.

Just a quick update on the two ! Sundowners hull is now painted a light maritime blue, few bits to touch in around hooks and rings, well she was an ex lifeboat, apart from anti fouling stuff which will be done nearer relaunch! Upper structure cleaned back now weather dependent. Engine serviced and winterized . Interior getting there! Beal na blath has been cleaned out hull inspected and very good news apart from 1 plank ,good just upper structure looks awful and a major job but I'll get there ! Oh found a 20euro note during clean up!! Don't want to bore you all but i though I'd just give an update.

Hi Mark

Why is there suddenly so much concern about boring people?
As I said to Donal earlier, nobody usually worries about that!
Why would they? If something's boring, don't read it, surely...no?
But, in this new spirit, I'd like to add my voice to the cacophony of non-boredom.
Keep it coming Donal...
