Sundowner and beal na blath

A very long but satisfying day yesterday! Was at Shannon harbour yesterday at 0820 to collect beal na blath , a very sleepy place indeed at that hour on a bank hol sat. She was loaded and on her way to kneadsbridge very quickly a sight that perplexed a few motorists I'm sure by lunch we had her unloaded and headed for Lanesborough and hanleys marina where sundowner was loaded a tight squeeze as a lot of people are choosing to have their boats lifted to the hard this winter. Everything checked we bimbiled down the r392 again to a few strange looks! And unloaded beside b na b .the neighbours thought there was a Marina opening up in front of them! Anyway a great day and major thank you's to Jason pender for opening the barriers so early for us, and jonathon Kennedy of Kennedy transport whose professionalism and expertise ensured a fasinating day highly highly recommended . Now the fun begins ! Have pics if anyone could volunteer to put them on the post

Sundowner is a lifeboat hull I see, floats in very little water but hard to control, I see a plate has been added as an extension at the waterline on the stern to try to control cavitation. Alun

Hi Donal

You HAVE been busy, haven't you?
Sundowner would certainly have tempted me, had I been able to face the trip to Shannon Harbour.
That looks like a relatively starightforward re-fit, though the shape will make for interesting carpentry/cabinet making on the interior.
Beal na Blath is a proper challenge.
Have you heard the description of boat ownership as being akin to putting on your best suit and taking a hot shower in it, while tearing E50 notes into little pieces?
Looks to me as though you'll be doing it twice... and that's just for B na B!
At least you're not too far away from me, so I can visit you when I'm feeling down and remind myself how good I have it!
I wonder does the carpenter on our little team know what he's letting himself in for...

Scary eye popping smiley I admire folk who actually complete the restoration of such huge projects.

Best of luck with it.

Getting stuck in to sundowner as I want her ready for mid feb ! Just wondering what paint to use primers and top coat, and best place to get it? The hull is aluminium and the uppers marine ply and teak .

Mid feb eye popping smiley I use international Toplac over two-part primer and roll and tip it. You might want to think about encapsulating the plywood in epoxy to seal it up before you paint it.

Thanks Fergal , Is that stuff easy to get just trying to work out my nearest stockist. The ply is actually very good so the epoxy sounds the right way to go.

I had her sister once, as an open boat, and she was galvanized steel, although to the untrained eye she might have appeared to be aluminium. Alun

Like galvanised steel, aluminium should be primed with an etch primer.

There is an excellent paint shop and factory with extremely
knowledgeable staff in Celbridge --- can't remember the name. Dick.

I get it from these guys and if you spend over €100 they post for free grinning smiley this has a very high gloss finish but if you don't want that I'm sure you can get a cheeper paint that will do a good job.

I was about to suggest it, after reading about the Lister on B na B.
Engines, once not seized, tend to go downhill slower in the dry than in the water.
Wood, however, deteriorates much more rapidly once on the hard, unless kept very dry.
Therefore, time spent playing with engines could be considered wasted, this early in the project, though I do understand the urge!
Keep us posted on your progress.
Sorry, can't help with paint and wood questions...
