Hi Folk's,

I have a Webasto HL3003 heating system, which failed to work last weekend. The control unit is a Kelvin Hughes "amber and green light" It goes through the initial start up phase perfectly but when the dial reaches full heat it cuts out, the green light doesn't come on. Before I arrive down to the boat at the weekend I was hoping that someone on the forum might of come across this problem and would be able to direct me hopefully in the right direction.

I do have fuel and power going to the unit and the ducting has not been touched.

Hi Mike

Not specific to the HL3003, just good general advice for dealing with unco-operative elderly heaters.
First, once you're sure it won't start, check there's power going to the glow plug.
With those rotary ones there almost always is, but check it anyway.
Feel the body of the glowplug, which should be warm, if the plug is working
If it's cold, and power is present, then congratulations, you've found your problem. Fit a new glowplug.
If it's warm, then there's a fuelling problem. This could be over or under fuelling, or it could be that the combution chamber is coked up and the fuel is not being mixed properly.
With these elderly units the only way to check is to dismantle them and look.
Once you get it working, be sure to allow it to come to a full stop before disconnecting the power. If you don't you'll just add more coke to the chamber walls and reduce the chances of a successful start next time

Hope some of that turns out to be some use

Thanks for the tip's, I have tracked down a pdf of the Workshop Manual for Webasto Heater Models,

HL 30,HL38,HL65,HL95 and HL125, everything you need to know from operating principles, commom installation problems and faultfinding.

Great.
I haven't seen an official manual for those old heaters. I've been lucky with them and they're robust enough to withstsnd my ham fisted tinkering when I was figuring them out.
I haven't seen one for several years now and was beginning to think they were going the way of all good things.
I wonder what parts availability's like now.
Ultimately that's what'll condemn it. Something won't be available or will be so scarce as to make it financially non viable.
Hopefully that won't be the case here.

Had an interesting experience with the new Webasto Airtop 5000 recently installed on Arthur.....

We were underway and simply could not get it to fire up. We contacted CH Marine who directed us to an authorised Webasto service agent who happened to be located at the destination to whch we were headed at that time. Local service agent duly came onboard and immediately dislcaimed any first-hand experience of servicing our particular Webasto model. He duly spent two hours tryng to diagnose the problem...to no avail! He then made a quick call to Webasto in the UK who prompted him to check the control unit. The timer had reset itself to zero and simply needed a time to be input and hey presto the Webasto unit fired up straight away.... spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

And the local agent would not accept any monetary payment for his time. But he did leave with a couple of nice bottles of wine tucked under his arm and our appreciation for his very generous consideration in solving the problem.
