1839 first proper paper charts. Btw, we have both digital and colour paper charts A1 and A0 in style of colour shaded marine charts. Suitable as wall souvineer charts.

I have a set called the "Pilot Book of the River Shannon" published by IWAI
and Bord Failte. Priced 2/6. Its undated but I'm guessing is late 1950s
because the magnetic variation shown on the accompanying charts is 1955.
I'm pretty sure it predates the 1963 Shannon Guide.

The Harry Rice charts, now in the care of the HBA date from 1960.

Well, looking at the images on my screen the OS Permit is dated 1952 but the
chart is actually signed HJ & C Rice 1960 so maybe the HBA set is later. I
didn't check all the sheets mind you.

Hi Colin

The chart I am looking at is in the book Thanks for the Memory p208-209
chart of derg on two sheets
signed H.J.R 1952

Are their two sets of charts ?

This chart is not based on the OSI Mapping but on the Inland Steam Navigation Chart of 1829

If you have an image of a later 1960's chart based on OSI data, would you forward me a copy

Of course the ones issued by Emerald Star et al are not charts at all. They are guides. Donal I have some early ones of that type if it's what you want.

Noel: Sorry Donal did you mean modern era (ie post 1954) leisure boat navigation charts?

Yes Noel I was looking for a date when the first Shannon Navigation Charts were published, presently the date is 1963 provided by Sven. Colin has a publication called "The Pilot Book of the River Shannon" which he believes is earlier (1950's)

The discussion has also trown up the possibility of two sets of charts by Rice 1952 and 1960

I presently have charts from 1773 to the present, but there must be more out there

Donal ,Have you looked at Charts Books Guides on this site ( [www.iwai.ie] ) .They are all listed. I too have a copy of the same book as Colin, mid 50s. I think the Rice charts are Lough Ree and there are copies or originals in the care of the HBA .I have seen them.

Talking about charts and guides, we have a Shannon Guide purchased about
1980. Printed on heavy card, A3 size, ring bound. One section of the area
per page on the right hand side with copious notes on the facing page.
Included little historical notes, local shops, times of church services
etc. For the life of me I cannot think of the author though ISTR they are
or were of IWAI hero status. Our copy is very dilapidated now but its still
the first point of reference for me despite having many other guides and
the original O.S. type charts on board. Keep meaning to have a copy
(illegally I know) scanned and laser printed.

I have The Shannon Book, published in 1966 by Geoffrey Dibb Ltd of
Norwich; it cost five bob. It isn't just about the Shannon, there are
sections on the Grand, the Barrow, Lough Erne, fishing, canoeing and
other relevant (and some not so relevant) matters. The Shannon section
is edited by John Weaving and contains small charts of different
sections of the river.

There are similar charts for the Grand and the Barrow.

Donal,

I am putting it down to a shy streak in your good self, but mention should be made of the "pre-launch pre-views" of your new chart. In both Garrykennedy and Tullamore there seemed to be strong interest and admiration.
Friday in Mountshannon is the big day I believe for the "star-packed" launch event. The best of luck with this labour of love Donal,

Joe.
Re: Shannon Navigation Charts

Many thanks for that Joe
Hope the people who got the preview of the chart liked it ?
The friday evening launch is set up. all we need now is a good crowd

Thanks again

Hi all,

here's a shot of the cover of the 1963 charts that I have:

and that is what it looks like inside:

Ok, it has seen better days, I suppose...

And finally here's a shot of the cover of the first "modern" chart that I have, which was printed in 1970 (and bought in 1973):

I reckon that is the Shannon Guide mentioned above by Paul. It is not A3 though, but an imperial format similar to A4 (probably F4).
