Banagher aka The Town I Left Behind (Johnny McEvoy)

Look - Kieran W, Les, PJ, the various Micks, Joe, Leslie, Sam, Andy Eile, Billy and all ye,

It's still the depths of winter and I thought I'd brighten the scene with a little number I came across this evening, PROBABLY the second-best rendition of this evocative anthem :

Can anyone suggest other river- or canal-connected songs on Youtube that might bring summer that little bit nearer?

Very disapointed Jim.....I assumed it would be your own self doing the performing. Then I noticed ya did say "SECOND'BEST"....sooooo.....who's number one....??

One of me own personal favourites is "Two Moons in Castle Harbour" from 2002. It's not on You Tube, but Des Byrne has the pics...!! He did promise to e-mail them to me.......Des....????

Jim,It's funny you should mention this. I was asked the other day about songs of the river or canal.
The only songs I know of about the Shannon are Moonlight on the Shannon River by ? and The Broad Majestic Shannon by The Pogues . I dont know any songs that mention the canals.
It's unusual I guess the there aren't songs about various events that happened. Maybe it's time we had a rally ditty album. My favourites are Jack Roberts cat and You picked a fine time to leave me Christine by Tim Keane.

? might be Bridie Gallagher.

Maybe Dublin branch wold sponsor a song about That Ould Effin Bridge or The day the Rambler had a nose job,or Mick Farrels favourite , I was aground on a brick.

Came o'er me stealin',
And the mice were squeelin'
In me prison cell,
And the ould........

Mick, The plan was to go from GCD to Spencer. What do you think of that?

What about....

Come all ye dry-land sailors bold, and listen unto my song,
There's only forty verses, so it won't detain you long.
It's all about the history of this here Lisburn tar
Who sailed as a man before the mast on the good ship Calabar

How about this one, not an Irish canal but Irish "Canal diggers" so I think the song could be used here smiling smiley

Yes PJ.....widdershins (as BJG might say) would also be acceptable. I almost made the mistake of saying "crossing the Liffey", but that would give you an out just west of Sallins...!!

Translate this from the Kraut, put it on the Forum and I'll buy you that pint (...and sing the song for ye) next time you're home.

Comrade Becker cited "Good Ship Calabar". There's a couple of athmospheric amateur versions on youtube but have a listen to Tommy Makem + Clancys as the definitive one. I forgot it refers to the Lagan Canal.

Keep the suggestions coming, crew.

Colin>>>Actually I've found versions related to the Grand Canal and several
English canals as well. I don't know which is the original.

I'm looking forward to the good Captain Becker singing that song and showin' all assembled his gallusses.
I'm sure some of the younger folk might die of the shock of seeing Beckers Gallusses.
Mick Farrell's lump of coal is also mentioned.

Don't worry lads about accompaniment. De Band ,won't interfere with yez.

We only play our own carefully arranged melodies.
