Yep, Markie wasn't even a glint in the eye, but the missus thinks it might be Andy Fitz, are we getting close

No it's not Markie, as you say, he's too young nut you are getting
warmer.......

OK, I really should read after I type...

That should say:

No it's not Markie, as you say, he's too young BUT you are getting
warmer.......

And said gentleman is probably one of few of the current generation of barge
owners who can claim to have grown up within earshot of the beat of a
Bollinder in the morning....

No no no no...... off at a complete tangent.
And any way De Iron Lung is an older boat than the xxM which said gentleman
drives.

And I'm surprised that yer missus hasn't twigged it by now......

Colin
Re: What, When, Where, Who

Now I am confused, The Lung is 49M and its younger.
If I didn't know better, I would fit a lot of the clues..
Like 41M, Guitar player(try), grew up beside Grand canal, right age, me missus has a photo of me that kinda looks like the wee man, Tipperary connection, but I don't now live in DNS (assume DNS is Dublin North Side).
But it can't be...

OK, I'll put you out of your misery. The location is Mountshannon Road on
the old, now closed, mainline into James St Harbour. I don't know which
boat it is but like you I think its a late model M boat, most likely 7xM.
But I don't know for sure. I think she's most likely carrying a cargo of
empty beer kegs given the shape of the load, the location and the fact that
she's not that deep in the water.
And the boy in the picture is a certain T. Dwane esq. sometime driver of 74M
who lives on De Nort Side with a certain Mrs C. Dwane who plays the guitar
and also drives 74M along with the other two co-owners Mrs N. Becker and Mr.
M. Becker. (Your were sort of on the right track with Markie!)
Obviously 49M is older than 74M that was just me being clumsy with my
writing.

So did Mr T. Dwane grow up on Mountshannon Road, just around the corner from me, or was that location just on a day out for him. Gees, it's a small world...

Great competition Colin, you even had Robbie and the missus at it...

Hi All,
Yes Tony grew up in house on Mountshannon Road, fell in the canal
when he was three, remembers playing football on the canal when it was
frozen and he certainly drives 74M Mick - just cause you ain't seen
it doesn't make it false!
Now, wasn't he a gorgeous little fellow?

Not saying it was "false" Cathy, just when you ain't seen it, it ain't going to be jumping straight into the front of your head. I had eliminated 74 on age/gender grounds....I simply never thought of Tony. Still waiting on an explaination for the "Oscar" clue though.

PS.....Cute as a button he was.....does he remember the "metaller"...??

He does remember the metal cover in footbridge.
As to Oscar surprised you so slow Mick -
Have you never heard of the Toni(y) awards?
Colin's clues are always a bit obscure you know!

Cathy etc.

Didn't know we were neighbours' children - New Ireland Road on other side of Rialto Bridge from Mountshannon Road.

Have vivid childhood memories (a generation before you fellas) of being driven across the spindly black iron bridge at the Grand Canal Harbour replete with barges, which seemed as huge as Venice at the time. Also Fatima Mansions being built early fifties, from where there was a drowning a year before they filled the spur in.

Not you as well Jim, Dolphin Road for me, and I remember the covered in bridge well and the huge boats in the dock, and the little trains further down...and the bolinder engines, and The Mascot....and so on.

The auld engine sounds must have affected us, since we are all now on the Shannon. Gees, we probably threw stones at each other.

Wonder if any more hail from the Area

Found the photo when trawling through Tony's Mother's bits.
She and Tony's Dad lived Mountshannon Road from about 1950.
Ellen's brother Tim Sullivan also lived same road few houses up.
Unfortunately there are none of them left to fill in gaps and dates.

Was that you throwing the stones I am a Drimnagh lad meself.
God ! the sound of those Bolinders through the open bedroom window on a summers night and the ghostly silhouette of the barge and bargee passing in the distance and the sound of the steam engines over at Inchicore works, I think they are in my DNA
Does anyone remember the fire at Parsons paint factory sometime in the fifties
Re: What, When, Where, Who

Jees Noel, those Drimnagh lads were out of bounds for us nice little boys, they were the tough lot. Must remember to keep some ammo nearby next time we meet.....you were obviously infected as well with the same bug...that sound....
