> Topic Log-in...how? (advice for former "waterways" email users) Posted by Duncan
Unapproved Message Hi allCan somebody please send me instructions for logging in to the forum? I always do it by following a link in the appropriate email, but that method won't work for much longer! Once I accidentally delete my last email from the forum, that'll be it, for me. Mind you, now that I'm not getting emails, I won't know when there's a topic I might be interested in, so I suppose it's an academic question anyway. I can't see me being sufficiently motivated to go trawling through 6 sections of a site I have to log in to first, on the off chance someone might have said something I want to hear, or asked a question I want to answer. I will always check my emails, however! Oh, probably best not to PM me, as I'd need to log in to read it! email me at sandun(at)eircom(dot)net Thanks Duncan Edited 1 time(s). Unapproved Message Duncan, it really is very simple.1.Bring up the IWAI.IE web page 2. Go to Discussion Group (located in small just under the banner) 3.You are there with all the entries. 4.Log in (small writing at top right) 5.Do not log out. ever 6. You will see flagged all entries you have not read. So you see immediately the new entries, once read the flag goes off. 7.When in an entry and you want to go to next one, just press Message list at bottom of thread, you are then back at main list updated. Do not Log out when finished. Next time you hit discussion group, you will be back where you left off. Couldn't be easier.. Les 41M
Unapproved Message Orginally posted in Jan 2011:All former list members who ever "posted" an email to the waterways list are automatically enrolled in the forum - I had to engineer the system in this way in order to push emails into the forum database. To retrieve your password (which will have been randomly assigned and can be changed), simply ... 1) click on the "Log In" link near the top of the forum pages or click on [www.iwai.ie] 2) enter your old "waterways" email address in the box to the right of the page, 3) hit the "Submit" button beneath the address. 4) your randomly assigned password will be sent to you complete with user name - also automatically assigned. 5) go back to step 1 above, but this time enter username and password. 6) click on the "My Profile" link at the top of the forum pages and change your password to something memorable. 7) as Les pointed out, don't bother to logout (unless you are using a public internet kiosk or the like) If you never previously posted anything to the waterways list, then you will have to enrol in the web forum by clicking [www.iwai.ie] . Previous email users may also like try the RSS feed which can be viewer from many/most email clients. See [www.iwai.ie] I hope this helps. Michael Edited 2 time(s). Unapproved Message "Simply" might be physically easy. Emotionally, however, there is a very high wall for me to climb.Regardless of the outcome of our current schism, I just can't see me returning to this "group", ever. I have simply lost all trust in it, especially in people I used to hold in the highest regard.I'll lurk awhile, in case any semblance of empathy returns - HA! Peter Edited 1 time(s). Unapproved Message Right. Moderator has patiently explained why my posts were culled last night, and I am happy that the correct line of action was taken.I am on record as being very unhappy with the direction this list is heading of late. Last night's remarks where therefore superfluous, and could only have winded some people up. Sometimes though, my tongue gets going before I can bite it :-( More importantly, I interupted Duncan's quest. Apologies Duncan, I hope you got the help you needed? Regards Peter
Unapproved Message Hi Peter, assuming you're still there, two weeks on.Yes, I got the requested email from Michael Slevin tonight. Not as quick as might have been hoped, but I suppose it must have been a hard time for the "authorities", too. I suspect I share your feelings, but my internet provider bit my tongue for me, so I have yet to feel the censor's hand at work! Not sure how likely that is, to be honest, as the extra effort now required to access the postings is certainly going to be reflected in the frequency of my visits, especially given the existence of a much more user friendly alternative. Regards Duncan Duncan
Unapproved Message Hi Duncan. As someone famously stated on the other channel, "just checking in here from time to time" :-)) I've been in no broadband land for a couple of weeks. Only seeing your reply now. Hope all is sorted and you are now a convert to the new format. But, with your rather unreliable internet connections, I suspect that you may have given up, or will not see this for a long time! Keep us up-to-date over yonder. Your place at the bar is reserved, and nobody dares to sit on your seat:-)) Peter
Unapproved Message Folks,I appreciate that those used to an email feed for quick viewing of the set of forum posts miss their quick fix. An alternative technology exists, namely RSS. The RSS feed may get close to that experience and to that end, I'd welcome recommendations, for PC/Mac/Android/iPhone etc. My own favourite is the "NewsFox" addon to the Firefox browser. Easy to see the new posts and preview them (and click through to the website). Assuming you have Firefox (an alternative to Internet Explorer for those on Windows machines found at www.firefox.com ), download NewsFox from [addons.mozilla.org] The following are all standalone applications: If you like a scrolling tickertape, a small light one is "Desktop RSS", again it allows a preview of a post (although not very elegant) - just hover over a title, or click to view the forum website. Download from [download.cnet.com] Another light one (1MB of RAM in use) is "Snarfer" - development on this has stopped but it seems OK - [download.cnet.com] NOTE: I have not thouroughly tested any of these applications and can take no responsibility for any problems you encounter on your PC, but I have installed them on mine without ill effect. I have tried a number of RSS readers on an Android, but amn't happy with any. I'd welcome suggestions. Michael Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 14/03/2012 23:57 by Michael Slevin.
Unapproved Message Hi Michael,I have always used my email client as an RSS reader: Thunderbird Mac Mail Outlook I find it easier to keep them all together... Mark.
Unapproved Message I'm not being deliberately stupid but as an older person(being kind to myself )with a phone that does little more than texts and calls and brought into the 21st century last xmas when Santa brought me a lap-top is there anything out there thats a step up from a pencil and paper that could help shed a light on all those initials you are putting on here. I like reading this forum and contributing occasionally but think i'm missing a lot of info when I see all those topic's about other sites and App's that are available. Mick
Unapproved Message Hi Michael, JohnSorry for the bafflement. RSS is a technique/protocol to allow busy(!) people to quickly scan a lot of information sources (i.e. websites) without actually visiting the websites. So from one location/tool on my computer, I can see what's recently posted on the IWAI forum, and on other websites I'm interested in. Those used to email only as a way of interacting with the forum might prefer a similar way of rapidly viewing the posts or being notified of new posts without actually visiting the website. As points out above, he can view the posts within his email application ... even if they are actuallly "RSS feeds" rather than real bona-fide emails. If the above makes no sense, then I envy you! ![]() Michael Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum. Online UsersGuests within the past 30 minutes:
