Greetings, The attached message just in from WI Best Wishes, Colin Becker GMY Chang Sha ================begins============= MARINE NOTICE No. 36 of 2012 ROYAL CANAL Summit Level Closed Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters and users of the Royal Canal that the summit level is closed until further notice due to low water levels and regrets any inconvenience that this may cause its customers. I am somewhat surprised that this closure has received no discussion here. Many boats were hoping to attempt the G&S this year. This is looking increasingly unlikely at the moment. 8 weeks brings us well into June. Opening the Royal Canal was a high profile showcase for WI. Ministers showed up at opening ceremonies. We had Rambler on the TV last autumn. The local groups which had been campaigning for years thought their campaigning days were over. And now what? WI just go 'meh', and close it. No notice. Why, no more kudos to be gained? Keep out those nasty boats that make us have to manage things like water levels? This is a real boating issue. If the Exec spent a fraction of the time they spend on Dunrovin on taking WI to task for their increasingly hostile unilateral actions then, maybe, the IWAI's membership might show them more respect and trust on projects like Dunrovin. Let's focus folks!
Conor, I think that the problem with the Royal has beaten Waterways Ireland. To be fair, I think that the Royal Canal, even in its glory days suffered from water problems. Something to do with the porous terrain and the water seeping away. The fact that a feeder supply was "Taken" to supply the town of Mullingar obviously hasn't helped. Whilst I understand that Westmeath County Council have agreed to provide an alternate supply, this will take time. Simply put, the Canal was re-opened too early. The infrastructure is not complete. But sure, maybe one day. Regards Kieran
Hi Folks, Just after I had clicked send/post message, I remembered a contribution that I had made to a thread on the re-opening of the Royal. The contribution was made on 27th August 2010. I have copied it below for your information. It has come to pass. Regards Kieran Quote: Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 12/04/2012 18:21 by Kieran Kearns.
After all the fanfare of the opening it is indeed a pity that it has been so short-lived. Beside the low water problems I was recently talking to someone who completed the triangle last year. They had about six serious mishaps along the way mainly due to obstacles in the water and required divers to get going again. In their own words " would never put their boat or themselves through it again". I had hoped to do it one day but not so sure. John Geary (Rose - E - Belle) Edited 1 time(s).
