> Topic First time into Dublin........ Posted by ralf
.....by barge. Yesterday i had the good fortune to be invited to travel on 4B into Dublin on its last leg of its trip via the Grand canal,68M was also making her way and so with much anticipation and a liitle trepidation i left my home at 5 am to meet at the designated lock at 6.30 am. ![]() Eunice and Cliff Jeffers were our hosts (masters and whip snappers) for the day and welcomed both myself,Cormac Smith,Carmel Meegan and Joe Byrne all Shannon navigation based aboard along with John and chris o neill from the Barrow navigation. A few photos to show how it went, [IMG] [/IMG] The previous nights rain did not help ith the height restrictions,Gerry Burke had at this stage filled the ballast and flooded the bilge to lower 68m. So the result of that is yes he gets under but then is sitting on the bottom !! "AHH sure we will sort it out" Cliff and Carmel Meegan on 4b Did i mention it was a tight squeeze..... we even imported a gondelier from the Barrow for the day. Gerry doing his best to clear the canal of rubbish!! Portobello. No favouritsm shown on 4b everyone works !! Conor and Gerry Who is that up yonder...... Who else could it be only Mick keeping a watchful eye on things and not for the first time today.....since 6 am. I knew there would be a reward somewhere along the line Safely in Mespil now after fab afternoon from what was a truly miserable wet morning. And some of the other HBA fleet making Mespil there home for a while before the Dublin Rally. For me this was a wonderful experience both from the city scenery point of view and from the fact that its hard bloody work, the locks, the pulling and pushing, squeezing into locks and under bridges, lowering entire stretches to get under a bridge and the filling again to get moving. What these guys do is really amazing BUT then again they do it because they love it and to see them there promoting our waterways and have a D4 address for the next few weeks its worth it. Many thanks to Cliff and Eunice and also Gerry and Geraldine, and not forgetting Mick Kinahan and Conor Nolan.
Great post and photos. Well done all. Great to see the rally arriving in Dublin for the annual festivities.OceanFroggie
Quote: Let me put it this way if there is a work party to resurect the "sub pens" on Derg ill help out........... ![]() In all seriousness all to there own and it was a great chance for me as a river boater to see the Grand from a city perspective,it truly was eye opening in every sense, but the comraderie and friendship and indeed public interest which i witnessed yesterday was immense, To see people showing an interest be it the general public or different branches in any waterway is always a good thing and that has to commended.
Yep, dropped in on the way home yesterday to see the new "D4 Residents" and in true D4 manner a choice of "red" or "white" was the decision to be made....... Great to see the boats building along the Mespil stretch. I always think the Basin is a bit hidden and the publicity gained from the pre-rally period along the Mespil stretch cant be bad for the City-waterways.| "Some day", between work and other things I will manage to do the spin into Dublin on the Grand or Royal. It took me until late last year to do the spin up the Liffey, so I suppose if I'm patient I'll get the Canal run as well. Great set of pics but how did you manage to "air-brush" the rain out, It looks like a lovely day....! PS: Is there any truth in the rumour that there are now 3 Brooms and a "lite-metal" boat for sale on the N-Shannon ![]()
