Building a jetty

Building a jetty
26 April, 2012 09:09
Hi. As a Community organisation, we intend to build a jetty for kayacks and un-powered boats on tidal water at the point where the 2 kilometer tidal stretch meets the fresh water of the river Inagh at Ennistymon in County Clare. We intend this to have minimal impact on the environment. The adjacent road - N67 - is approx 5 meters above the river level and I see the finished structure - after sloping parralen with the river - to emerge from the riverside trees on the the pontoon. We are open to ideas!
Regards,
Robert Bennett.

Robert, I've built a number of canoe jetties in my time on the Derg, Owenkillew, Strule/Mourne and the Camowen. The canoe ppl prefer a number of steps, ie a number of different levels, to accomodate holding the canoe in position at various different water levels in order to get aboard! Don't know what your range of water levels are but that would be the first thing to establish. Have you any experienced canoeists locally? Also, canoe jetties tend to be in pairs, a start and a finish if you like, maybe a mile apart. Possibly more important in white water stuff were it's not possible to paddle back to the start! good luck with your project, Alun

1- Contact the Irish Canoe Union. They help to develop new clubs
2- You will need planning permission. It's probably best to have an exploratory meeting with the local planner before you incur any expense. You could also have a chat with any other users of the river and see what they think of your idea.
3- There may be a grant or two going. Try Lotto, Leader and County Council. A supportive local politician won't go astray!
Good Luck,
Paddy

Dear Patrick.
I appreciate your reply and I did not know about the Irish Canoe Union. Leader are on board (!). The Co. Council are co-operative. The Lotto is a good idea. Thanks...........Robert.

Hi Alun. The point at which the jetty will be put is tidal, so the boats will be moored to a section of pontoon, thereby dealing with levels. Although the river Inagh is level and tidal for at least 3 kilometers, the idea of a second jetty as a "start/finish" is very apt. When we get one built, the logic of the second one will be obvious. If you can attach any phots you may have, that would be great. Regards, Robert.
