See post(s) from Dick Warner below re Lowtown from the IWIUG channel.

M(W&W)F

"The legal battle over Lowtown has started. The owners of the boatyard have served a High Court summons on Waterways Ireland. They are claiming that WI closed down a viable business on spurious grounds and are attempting to occupy property that is not, in fact, theirs. My understanding is that the law case will take several years but that the owners intend to re-start the boatyard business with all its facilities in the meantime, either by finding new tenants or by direct employment. The cost of the law case will be considerable and the owners have asked me to administer a fund to subsidise this cost, which waterways enthusiasts could contribute to. I have agreed to do this because I believe very strongly that the facilities that were provided at Lowtown, and hopefully will be again, are very important to the Grand Canal and the whole waterways system and that the action taken by Waterways Ireland was unjust. I have a lot more detail but I don't want this to be a very long post. Anyone who wants more detail or wants to make a contribution or organise a fund-raiser can pm me or call me on 045 869291. Dick Warner."

I'm not fond of banks, for a variety of reasons, but I discovered this afternoon that it's possible to set up a Post Office savings account in the name of a club or association. So I'm in the process of setting up such an account in my local Post Office in Donadea, Co Kildare, in the name of the Lowtown Support Club. Anyone wishing to contribute to the defence of Lowtown should make cheques, money orders or bank drafts payable to the Lowtown Support Club. They will have to be given to me (I'll be on the Dublin rally) or posted to Dick Warner, Gilltown, Donadea, Co Kildare. I'm afraid we can't accept plastic donations, though I suppose cash would be okay. I intend to post details of the accounts regularly on this channel but my instinct is that it would be better not to name individual donors with the amount of their donation --- correct me if I'm wrong. Many thanks to the anonymous well-wishers who've already pledged their support.

Dick Warner.

Dick, having some experience (not all good) of fundraising, I would suggest asking that persons sending donations enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope so a receipt can be sent. Rule 1(a) of the Code of Conduct for Voluntary Service applies............. ie: CYA. (Cover Your Ass)
I don't know the details of the situation re Lowtown, but if Dick is involved it must be a worthy cause.
Good luck,
Phil.
