Pink Ribbon Mystery North Shannon.

Pink Ribbon Mystery North Shannon.

This is not easy to explain but it is something that has me a little confused and even more intrigued,
On the navigation north of Carrick-on-Shannon both to Leitrim village and as far as Clarendon lock there are these little pink ribbons BUT why are they there??? they were obviously tied there so someone has gone to a lot of effort.
The ribbons are placed at approx 200 m intervals and are placed both sides of the river tied to reeds, posts, trees and bushes etc.
I have asked the rowing club many freinds and local branch members,WI and pretty much everyone else ive met and they all think im nuts BUT the photos below show im telling the truth (i may well be nuts spinning smiley sticking its tongue out )

Any one care to put me out of my misery.............

I know up North here the Pink Ribbon symbol has to do with Breast Cancer Awareness so maybe it has a similar message down south and some-one is trying to bring it to the boaters attention.Mick

Intriguing. Few weeks ago I had a pink ballon mystery on lough Derg. Spotted a line of them in the water spaced approx 50m appart for a mile running north south in Killaloe bay. Looked like they had been gas filled ones that landed on the lake from some distant launching spot but who knows. How they landed so uniformly on the lake is a mystery.

OK if this is so the mystery has escalated.
This is a serious conundrum (and wrecking my head with curiosity) and one that i will offer a small prize to the first correct person whose answer/reason can tell me why they are there......................

I too thought they were survey markers, but then I saw them on the Grand above Shannon Harbour... There's one tied to a mooring line just east of Griffiths Bridge.

Sure did Donal, but didn't see any ribbons. But given what they did say I am going with Donal, CFRAMS survey. I have a telephone number so ifnoone answers by tomorrow I will ring Murphys and confirm or deny CFRAMS as a possibility

They are also randomly along the roadside from Banagher and Cloghan to Blue Ball - have 'Googled' it and come up with the following -

After last year's successful event the locals are once again gearing up to 'Turn Claremorris Pink'. The all pink affair will take place on April 21, 2012 and all funds raised on the day will go to the Mayo Cancer Association. It will be a tremendous day of fun and entertainment for both Children and Adults. There will be everything from music to fancy dress and from treasure hunts to poster competitions, the entire community are invited to turn out in pink on the day and raise money for a worthy cause. As well as entertainment the organising committee are planning a mass in St. Colman's Church to remember all our loved ones who lost their battle with cancer. There will also be a remembrance tree on the day and people will be invited to place names and pink ribbons on the tree

It seems to be that local areas organised a 'Pink Ribbon' event and all funds go to Irish Cancer Society.

Sad I know, but I did a search. [www.ireland-salmon-fishing.net]

"The pink ribbons that hang from the trees on the river bank stand testament to her involvement in raising money for breast cancer awareness through fishing days on the river. While next year a US established programme called Casting for Recovery which uses fly fishing as a means for survivors of breast cancer to be in peaceful surroundings and in the outdoors will be coming to Ireland which Glenda will be involved in."

It may still be a survey confused smiley
