> Topic Need to buy a satnav Posted by Paul Dunne
I am looking to buy a sat that comes with the inland waterways charts on board. Could some one tell me is it a case of buying a basic garmin and downloading the software on line. Or is there somewhere I can buy the whole package ready to go? Thanks for your help once again! Ps : the crane is booked for the 30th of the month - fingers crossed we are ready. I recently bought a factory refurbished Garmin 620 from an American company via ebay. It is totally indiscernible from new, has a years warranty and comes with a UK charger. I picked this model as it has the biggest screen which is portable. Seperately, I bought two SD cards from Garmin. The marine chart for the Shannon, and also the OSNI map of Lough Erne which has the markers shown. (even on hardcopy, this is the best chart for navigation on the Erne currently.) I am totally happy with my setup and believe it was good value for money. Hopefully this will help. Andrew Woodpecker
John, The Blue Chart for the Shannon is called "EU300P Ireland Waterway - The Shannon". It costs £89.99. The OSNI map for Northern ireland is called "Northern Ireland Discoverer". It costs £99.99. The whole of Northern Ireland is covered at 1:50000 scale but various touristy parts are to 1:25000 scale. Lough Erne is fortunately at the larger scale and has the markers marked on the map with generally excellent accuracy. The depths, and depth contours seem to be fairly accurate too. It is of course really useful to have the sourrounding countryside fully mapped as well should you wish to go for a walk! Both are available on the Garmin website as either download or on SD card for the same price. I chose to purchase them on SD as I can transfer them to another chartplotter in the future if I wish. They are excellent. Now I can leave myself open to be accused of "promoting a specific manufacturer" too! Andrew Woodpecker
