Tv reception

Tv reception

Hello All ,
I made it to the Shannon at last. Just had a great family weekend in Banagher. I bought a tv last friday in anticipation of bad weather.
For the life of me we could not get any kind of watchable tv reception.

Tv is saorview,
Went through the digital auto tune process.
Bought a powered aerial it Works in the boat.
Moved the arial around the boat.

Thank God it had a DVD player otherwise there would have been two very frazzled parents and five board children

Thanks for your help.

Paul,

Welcome to the future! After 24th October, when analogue signal is turned off, we will all be relying on digital signal to receive our favourite soaps. While the quality of reception is superb with digital, the big problem is that you will either get a perfect picture or nothing at all (No fuzzy picture in the middle).

I couldn't receive any digital reception while on the GC and the Barrow last May. Reception was also hit and miss on the Shannon. A far better result is now obtained after I heightened the aerial by 7ft. I can now obtain a signal, even in Banagher harbour.

A friend of mine in the business has suggested that I replace the Omni-directional aerial with a directional one. He believes the signal strength is being diluted when the former is searching through 360 degrees.Of course the pain with the latter will be adjusting it to point in the best direction each time you reach port.

Hope this helps - happy Eastenders:-)

Peter.

You really need a directional aerial, otherwise you will not get a signal. I tried several receivers, also USB-sticks, and all of them only worked when connected to the roof-top aerial here at Killinure Point. Your omni-directional aerial or the small stick-yokes that come with some receivers may work in well-built up countries or near a TV mast, but not in rural Ireland sad smiley A reception map can be found here:

and you will see, that we're in nowhereland here along the Shannon angry smiley

Hi Sven,

Emm.........I'm getting a signal with the omni, from Terryglass to Hodson Bay sofarsmiling smiley

Thanks for the location map. I see though, in Athlone, at least 3 comments confirming good signals from Cairn Hill transmitter in Longford and Kilduff relay station in Tipperary. That, and the areas in between covers a good bit of the Shannon, though I suspect height of aerial is the keysmiling smiley

Regards

Peter.

I'm sitting in Dromineer harbour now, perfect Saorview reception here, using an omni directional aerial on the flybridge. In my experience reception around Banagher doesn't seem to be great and as said before, you either get the signal or you don't there is no in between, so keep a good stock of DVDs on board smiling smiley Does anyone know if reception will get better after the analog transmitters are switched off?

Peter,
sorry, didn't make myself clear enough: you need sort of line-of seight, and the higher the aerial the better, to get a reliable reception. There is no poor reception with digital TV, you either have a picture or you don't.
Reception will not get better when the analog transmitters are switched off: they use a different frequency, which will be used for 4G eventually (if it ever comes to Ireland...). The only solution to improve the availabilty of digital TV in the Midlands would be to put up another mast in the Athlone area - and I can't see that happening in a rush.

Best regards from Killinure Point

Recent omi on radar arch experience:

Athlone town weak
Athlone LRYC good
Shannon bridge okish
Banagher ok
Portumna good
Terryglass weak
Mountshannon good
Terryglass okish
Killaloe ZERO signal

Ps. 3G mobile vodafone very poor on river compared to two years ago. Terryglass and Mountshannon GPRS only.

Don't forget to wind up the attenuator on the amplifier on the omni aerial. So far, from Killaloo to Lough Key, no probs at all anywhere.
Similar setup to me needed the attenuator turned clockwise to bring in signal at Jamestown. Directional aerial not necessary anywhere and would be a pain to use.
