13th Lock Haunting

Greetings,

Has anyone come across a poem by Arthur Griffith about the haunting of the 13th Lock on the Royal Canal ?
If so, can you send me a reference to where it can be found ?

A bit of Googling brings up a few mentions but not the actual text.

Best Wishes,

Colin

Hi Colin

I wonder is this any good to you in your search, I came across it on a kildare heritage site.

It is a few lines from the poem, maybe you can take it from there ?

"Then the skipper quick made a mighty kick and
the mariner felt the shock, and the crew found a grave
'neath the deep blue wave on the way to the thirteenth lock..."

Hi Sandra,

I've actually turned up two poems with the same name and as soon as I track down a bit more information (specially about copyright stuff) about them I'll post them here. Your lines seem to come from one called "The Thirteenth Lock" that appeared in a a book called "Ireland's Other Poetry - Anonymous to Zozimous" compiled by Jackson & McDonnell published by Lilliput Press. That one is definitely credited to Arthur Griffith.

But there is another one. Folks will be aware that there's a band called "The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock" [thirteenthlock.net] who credit their name to the poem but it's a different poem and it begins:

Every night of the year about twelve of the clock,
The spirits and spooks of the dread Thirteenth Lock
Sit swinging their bodies a-this and that way
And singing in chorus "Ri tooril li lay."

Best Wishes,

Colin

not to hijack your thread but i have spent quite a bit of time there over the summer.it is alovely spot and allmost free of the dope smoking/can drinking brigade that seem to congregate in every harbour on the eastern end of the royal.the spin between the 13th and carton /pike bridge is one of the nicest on the canals.as for the ghost i have not yet seen him/her but sometimes at night when you are taking a leak in the bushes it would make you think.maybe its something to do with poor auld rags the dog who departed for the great kennel inthe sky.

Agree completely with you Paul, the 13th and surrounding tow paths are special places with no visible anti-social evidence. We passed through there on Sunday afternoon and had a chat with some walkers who had come from Spencer Dock that morning. A very picturesque area with the odd walker.

Joe.
