How much is this anchor worth?

How much is this anchor worth?
14 April, 2013 16:25
Hello, I have this boat anchor (see picture attached) and I was wondering what it was worth. I thought it might make a nice piece in a lawn of a hotel near the seaside or something like that.

The anchor is 4 feet high by 3feet 3 inches wide. It takes 3 men to lift it. Tried to upload a picture of it but the file size is too large.

Would like to hear your thoughts.

No. How would I find that out? Is it printed on the anchor?

For Dawkins' sake, just look for the ship with the missing anchor. Flippin' obvious... Sheesh...

Now usually such anchors have a socking great crossbar on the shank set at right angles to the flukes to dig 'em in to the mud when dropped.
Reduced value without one, I'd say. Now our rowing eight was down at O'Brien's Br. a few weeks ago and last Saturday I sat in and wondered why she was going so well. We'd obviously dropped it then.

Get people to bid for it on E-bay and see how much it goes for.

Don't think so. I think this is a "stockless" type which doesn't have a cross-bar. It relies on the pivoting head and it's weight a lot. Has the advantage of being self-stowing in it's recess when hauled aboard.

Too big for Chang-Sha ayway.

Perfectly right, Colin. Just the shank to retract into its hole on the bow with just the rotating flukes showing, but I won't be queuing up to buy it, just the same.

Toy boats, this is a Man's Anchor

Now If you want a good home for it, I will hang it on the frunt wall of The James & Mary

I don't know that the ship's name would be on the anchor, but there might be a makers name on it or serial number. Hingley's is just one to mention anchor maker, they made the Titanic's anchor. I must look at the ones on the Cill Airne and do some research. Thought you just might know which ship its from...not to worry though. It could be an interesting research quest if you had nothing to do sometime.

Remind us again Donal what the defining criteria are for a boat to be in Toy Class?

I will have a look for any markings and post what I find.
