Unapproved Message Please let us know if there are any things you a) don't like; b) would like improved about the web-based forum at www.iwai.ie/forumBear in mind that we're not magicians - however, we'll try and introduce improvements as time permits. Desired Features
- Do a separate forum for mobile users.
- add ability to indicate IWAI affiliation, boat name, picture, etc. on user profiles.
- Add a capability to change one's username
Known Anomalies Bugs etc.
(We'll sort these out one at a time - bear with us.)
- Anomaly: Incoming mail to the forum containing the URL http://www.worldcruising.net/boat3.asp?BoatID=1304 has it stripped to http://www.worldcruising.net/boat3.asp?BoatID rendering it useless e.g. [www.worldcruising.net]
- If incoming emails have a “Re” or “Fw” and if there is no initial post, then we strip of the crap and create a new post. This can cause problems with indexing – whereby the posts get appended to the wrong posts. Of course, one may have emails arrive in the wrong order and so not get properly indexed.
- Anomaly – the allocation of incoming emails to threads can err
- Private Messaging: The list of recipients is sorted by “username” but shows the “Display Name”
- URL s in web-forum posts are stripped when forwarded to email.
- Emails originating from the forum are not threaded, they contain no header info such as “in reply to” etc. This means that they are not properly threaded in sophisticated eail clients.
- We don't correctly handle high 8-bit characters e.g. the euro (€) or pound (£) symbol. on incoming emails..
- Single apostrophes are replaced with "?" on incoming emails, leading to horrible artifacts similar to ?this? and "John?s boat".
- Where an email user takes an existing post, hits reply and then changes the subject line, i.e. he's using this as a shortcut to creating a new topic, then the new post on a new topic will be posted under the original topic, i.e. we're using the "in-reply-to" logic. This is probably a needed feature since people do change subject lines a bit and we'd like them kept within the same topic even if the subject line changes a wee bit.
- Text within Angle brackets "<" and ">" is deleted when reading from an email to the forum.
- Email addresses that are in a web-post are shown in the clear e.g. mary.bloggs@iwai.ie - ffor email addresses originating in an email-post, the "@" symbol is substituted with "[AG]" .
- Large embedded images are not handled properly - ideally, should be written to file and not the DB. update: JPGs are now stored in filestore only.
- Incoming emails which reference URLs have them disappear - see thread http://www.iwai.ie/forum/read.php?1,8477
- The date/timestamp of the incoming email is used instead of the time the email is received - can cause problems if sender's computer is incorrectly configured..
- The "sent PMs" list is not updated - reported 20/02/2012 ..

Unapproved Message Michael, thanks and well-done to the team involved in this. Seems to tick all the boxes we wanted. Most of my previous concerns about a forum concerned access from mobile computing platforms; PDAs, Smartphones and now this has been sort of legitimised, following the introduction of the iPhone, with mobile-friendly sites popping up all over the place. So a couple of suggestions ... Could a lighter version of the forums be made available, i.e. the existing forum without the top and left-side matter? Maybe [ m.iwai.ie] I use an mobile RSS reader - could you document the various parameters in the RSS URLs. I figured the obvious ones, but is there a way to set the number of articles shown, new only, by date, etc. -- Conor (Magnet)

Unapproved Message Conor, I have been contemplating something similar - but first things first (lots of things have been put on the backburner while the forum got all attention for the past month or more). I've a nice 3G phone and was thinking of doing a subsection of the website either www.iwai.ie/mob or [ mob.iwai.ie] with links to lockkeepers contact details shannon lockkeepers contact details canals lockkeepers contact details barrow mechanics contact details! latest forum posts (e.g. RSS link) (other suggestions welcome) Its not a lot of work (~one night) to do this and definitely something on the nearterm to-do list. A lighter variant of the forum can also be done (again not a lot of effort). I'll have to come back re the RSS paramaters - I haven't looked into how easy it is to configure. (ahhh nothing like a to-do list!) Michael

Unapproved Message I think that's what's technically called a bug! I spotted something similar last night - we did spot 3 or 4 anomalies since February. Now watch your posts magically appear (following this post) - there's a problem with pages being cached on the server instead of being retrieved from the database. On another "funny" note, the core Phorum software on which the IWAI forum is based issued a release update today, which means our software is already out of date (on day 1). Michael Edited 2 time(s). Unapproved Message Yes well done Michael Folks you have no idea how much work and expertise has gone into this project. Michael has put a phenominal effort into building a combined email and BB forum. We owe him a debt of gratitude. Super job - well done. The best of both worlds and choice. Email or BB the members can choose. Noel

Unapproved Message Hi Michael, I am most likely missing something very obvious here and perhaps you can point me in the right direction. In other forums(Specifically Club Powerboat) it is possible to easily respond "off-list" to a posting by selecting "PM" (Private mail). Is this option possible at the moment or perhaps on the wish list........ Many tks again Richard and Mags "REFLECTION"

Unapproved Message Hello Richard, We'll enable Private Messages - give us a few days. We originally wanted the absolutely minimal set of features initially, introducing the more fancy stuff later. Michael

Unapproved Message Richard, Private Messaging is enabled. Please note the following however that ALL people who have posted emails to the forum over the past few years will seem to be in the forum. This DOES NOT mean that these people will ever check the web-based forum - they may only ever interact with the forum by email. However, depending on a setting in the user's profile, they may or may not receive an email when you send them a private message. See I told you that the interaction between web-based forums and email lists is non-trivial ;-) On another note, we ARE preparing a comprehensive user guide - apologies in advance for its belated arrival. Michael

Unapproved Message Michael This forum works a treat. [My digest has disappeared again but not to worry, this is the way I will be accessing from now on] Congratulations on the Endeavour Cup, was delighted to see you receive it - you provide a superb service to us all.

Unapproved Message Michael I've just tried to do a No No - as in attaching three photos (jpg's), much larger than the allowed size to an e-mail. My apologies, I did not read all the instructions. I believe my cancellation worked or you in your wisdom have set up a block so the large attachment could not succeed. However, would still like to send the message and refer to the three photos. Can you suggest an approach? Beth Aqualegia

Unapproved Message Beth, I've temporarily increased the maz size permitted - initially, we didn't know how the database would cope with the forum so we set the limits quite small. We WILL do a user guide "soon" which will explain how to reduce/upload photos etc. Post away. Michael

Unapproved Message Thanks - Re-sized them to within the stated sizes and have succeeded - next time might just use web based compression which seems to reduce my photos to around 35kb and would look better in a message - Beth

Unapproved Message I've noticed it before - Can I ask people who post using the web-based forum NOT to give people's email addresses as plain e.g. mary.bloggs@iwai.ie - please obfuscate it in some way, e.g. mary.bloggs_AT_iwai.ie. We'd like to protect people's email addresses from SPAM and the best way to do this is not to publish them in the plain form. If you include an email address in a post originating from an email client, the "@" sign is automatically converted to "[AG]" so mary.bloggs@iwai.ie becomes mary.bloggs[AG]iwai.ie . I've added it to the list of anomalies that need to be sorted - Sorry for the techie interjection on what is a glorious day. Michael (P.S. I've created a dummy email address for the fictitious mary.bloggs - we'll see how long it takes for her to get some email - this is referred to as a honeytrap)

Unapproved Message Well Done Michael, The forum is a great improvement on the e-mail, I'm sure lots of people (like myself) who had moved away from the list because it chocked their email will be clambering to get back now, a good indication that your hard work is appreciated Harry
