MN#85/17 - SHANNON NAVIGATION - Rooskey & Victoria Locks - Gate Replacement Works

Greetings,

Just talking to WI and they say they are planning to close Victoria and Roosky locks for major gate replacement works from October 16. (The eastern deep gate at Meelick has been out of action for at least a year which has hampered lock operations somewhat)

Don't have the full details yet and a Marine Notice should issue shortly but I understand they plan to start initial works on site on October 9 and lock passage will be somewhat restricted during that week with final closure on 16th.

They hope to have the works completed by Christmas but of course that's very weather dependent.

The works at Meelick are a major challenge for them because they think they will have to bring a big crane down the river on a pontoon. The access bridge over the new cut can't take the weight of the crane.

The gates for Meelick are being manufactured in Holland and will be assembled in Munster Harbour, Portumna and floated up to the lock on a pontoon.

And before somebody asks how did the Victorians do it in the olden days, they used a device called a "gin-pole", basically a stout pole supported by guy-wires with a hefty block and tackle. While WI do have such a contraption, it seems it no longer meets current health and safety rules so they need a crane.

So the point is, anyone planning a trip that involved passage of either of those locks over the October Bank Holiday weekend or whatever needs to think again!

Whenever we get more details I'll post them here.

Best Wishes,

Colin
