Greetings,

The notice implies this incident happened a week or more back and they've only just gotten around to telling us. Anyone any idea what happened? Fuel spill? Effluent discharge? Silage run-off?

I don't see anything on the interweb about it.

Heard from patroller last Wednesday that someone reported a fuel spill at Lock 6 Ballinamore to Enniskillen HQ. Lock 6 was closed immediately pending investigation, left a couple of boats stranded. Was expected to open Friday, but obviously more serious. Word was possible hydraulic fluid leak.

I gather the canal did open over the weekend because a friend of mine who had been caught in the closure got clear on Sunday.

I understood that the gate systems used an environmentally friendly hydraulic oil to mitigate the effects of just such a problem.

"Sources" in Waterways Ireland say the issue was at L7. They thought they had contained the problem but then discovered there was oil seeping from elsewhere in the lock and so they are investigating further.
