Dodder Public Transportation Opening Bridge: Public Consultation
16 February, 2018 11:08
Dublin City Council has commenced the planning and design of the Dodder Public Transportation Opening Bridge. The scheme comprises a new public transportation opening bridge over the River Dodder at its confluence with the River Liffey along with the construction of approach roads associated with the bridge; the construction of a new control building; the provision of a new club house and facilities for St Patrick’s Boat Club; the reclamation of land to the west of Tom Clarke Bridge to facilitate the build; the landscaping of the area between York Road/Thorncastle street and the R131 over the extents of the project.

The purpose of the proposed bridge is to improve the pedestrian, cyclist and public transportation accessibility between the Poolbeg Peninsula and the rest of the city and to allow the development of the proposed Poolbeg West Strategic Development Zone (SDZ). The bridge will be capable of opening to allow the passage of river traffic up and down stream. The Dodder Public Transportation Opening Bridge will connect Sir John Rogerson’s Quay to a new junction with the East Link Road (R131) in Ringsend. The proposed bridge will be able to accommodate a light rail system (LUAS) at some future date, whilst private cars will be prohibited from using the bridge.

Drawings of the proposed development are available to download at the links below:

Just to make a couple of points having attended DCC consultation event in Ringsend last week. One of the consultants attended and dealt with queries.

This is only first stage in planning process with focus now on environmental impact.

There will be an ABP oral hearing later in 2018 where all concerns can be raised.

Confirmed that the opening span clearances are at 6.1m and 2.1 at high water which is an improvement on Eastlink.

Provision for LUAS tram will be via a circuit through the tracks. Consultant pointed out that this system is already in place on Sam Beckett bridge (which opens occasionally) so the existing Bus lane can be converted to carry a future tram if required.

There was also reference to a need for dredging around mouth of Dodder in preparation for bridge piers.

Also a detailed hydrographic survey, ie mapping the bottom around the general area will commence soon.
