Results 1 - 30 of 509 We were unfortunate to have our barge broken into sometime over the last week (Leinster Mills). Our stove, flue, five batteries, a mast, ten years of rally plaques and assorted bits of metal and a pair of binocs were all taken. What's galling is that most of the stuff will just be sold as scrap.
So, on the off chance that anyone becomes aware of a Reflex kerosene stove being offered for sale

- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumI sold a 33 foot motor cruiser to a gentleman many years ago, who told me he was taking the vessel via the canals (the Grand canal I think), to the river Barrow. The boat (at that time) carried the name "Maid of Erne".
Does anyone know if that vessel is still around the area ?.
I understand that the boat is currently to be found at the inner lakes of Lough Ree. I also believe it is for sale

- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumDropped into the Kildare Easter gathering yesterday. Boats were gathered at the junction with the disused Blackwood feeder. Enjoyed a very interesting walk around Ballinafagh Lake - the original canal reservoir. That's the third walk-and-talk we've been treated to this year.
In the photo below is one of the last boats to arrive. Note the mountains in the background - on the day when we ch

- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumExcellent broadcast. If you didn't hear it be sure and get the podcast/listen on-line. It really captured what is so magical about the canals - the people, the boats, history, community ...
And Catriona really encapsulated our 'affliction'
Well done all involved.

BTW, nice photographs. Did you visit?

- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumGreat work Mick. Good synopsis of the situation. One of your better pieces. With you 95% - I would still debate 'the appropriate permit' bit in para 1.

- IWAI Waterways Discussion Foruma word of warning pj, in case you are steered to invest in an irish wide beam barge a deep drafted replica dutch barge or a large cruiser these boats are unsuitable for the canals and the barrow due to their draft and problems in fitting in locks.
What!?! For real?
So our fleet of M boats, wide-beam narrow boats, replica dutch barges and asstd cruisers that cruised as far as Waterford via

- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumThe river is in a state at the moment. The chances of the floods receding/ being finished ,before say March 10th,must be only 50/50. If so then there are few boats from Derg that would be able to travel that early.

Ah come on, it's only Feb. To quote Oddball: "Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?"

- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumThat said, you're unlikely to catch the fleet until they're much nearer Dublin. So take your time. It's too nice a trip to rush. There are many places worth spending a couple of days and enjoying.
Also, might be worth checking with Joe to see if there are any other 'stragglers'. Always nicer to do canals in company.

- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumAh now Noel. Are you getting old? It's just different is all. It's not a smart-phone/tablet OS. It's Windows. Windows that can run on a tablet too (not a phone). Windows 8 is a better Windows 7. Just get over the fact that the Start Menu is new. If you went through the OOBE you should have seen the orientation video. All explained about using a mouse. Use the power of the Start screen in

- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumHi Kieran
Yes I have heard of the electolyte effect, but I do not know the nature of the problem, nor the rules involved and I am slow to spend money on the basis of heresay, trying to solve a problem I don!t appear to have. That said, I am open to enlightenment
Regards Noel
Sorry, more drift ...
Noel, might be worth a peep when you next dry-dock Mollie (!). As PJ says SH is a bit of a b

Recollections from my days on the fringes of IC fab - the carbon filters don't trap minerals, etc, or smaller impurities - not like millipore filters in your pharma days. Just chlorine and organic stuff (carbon based).
Those big resin packs were ion-exchange filters, they pulled out the heavy metal ions.
What about the water in a dehumidifier. If the air in the boat is

- IWAI Waterways Discussion Forum... and I see they have updated the page on the WI website once again. New Canal Permit sounds so much better than Canal Enforcement.
More drip feed. So you'll get your 250 back within 9 weeks if you don't owe them any money. Insurance may just need to be public liability. Permits will be mandatory (but not for all?) in a couple of years.
And the big one for me - you can only fill in the

- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumYou know lads, I really wouldn't get bogged down on the fees. The real issues are those mostly covered in the Kildare statement. We're going to get charged, period. I'm sure the Shannon will follow in time. Why, maybe the marina operators and even private harbours will be levied too. We don't know. But ... we, as an organisation, should be involved in consultations and have some input.

- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumThanks Les.
Howya Mick. Yes, very different trip. Strangely it was more relaxing. Everything happens much more slowly - and that's just the way it is. No point in fussing. Had to drop the levels at Tullamore/Kilbeggan Bridge, Landenstown Bridge and L. Mills/L2. Tight squeeze at last bridge out of Rahan. But we are totally un-ballasted. Don't think we would ever get through Blackhorse

- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumSo, as was mentioned elsewhere, should WI be required to seek planning permission? Take Leinster Mills. Those of us who have moored there have always accommodated the house owners views and wishes. It's all about getting along. If WI just bang down a few mooring posts without any local consultation what will they think then? Straight to their local councillor I suspect.
I don't have a good

- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumMick, I think the bit below is referring to their (hoped for) future power to charge more in popular areas. Currently they are running with a franken-byelaw - pulling in bits of the Shannon byelaws when it suits.
What ever did happen the 2010 byelaws consultation. There was a process. WI should be made to stick to it, not just cherry-pick bits of it.

- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumAh! The photo of the three boats? They are stern to the bank at an old loading bay. Like a very small harbour. They're not even in the canal passage..
by Conor Nolan
- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumThen consider yourself corrected
The 'safe' mooring space is quite limited at Leinster Mills and with the influx of extra boats this year it has been neccessary to double up. Even with boats doubled it was possible for the large boats heading back to Sallins, after the Naas Harbour Rally, to pass without hindrence.

- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumWelcome. Nice quiet spot, but quite a bit fuller this year because of the on-going works at Lowtown. Beautiful at this time of the year.
Brought 118B up the last stage of its journey on Sunday. Had to let the tide out some and still a tight fit!
by Conor Nolan
- IWAI Waterways Discussion ForumIt's just the shape at the bow. Some of the old canal boats are nearly 62' long, but the curved bows fit into the curved cill. Mollie's square front would keep it back a couple of feet. Probably the same problem at the other end, The squareness would stop the gates closing. And apparently not all locks are the same size.
Better luck on the other canal.
