The Heritage Boat Association (HBA) has recently published a new edition of Cool Metal – Clear Water, a history of the boats that plied the Grand, Royal and Barrow from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s.
The book contains new material obtained from the current owners, the boatmen and their families, the public as they interacted with boats around the country and the researchers who perused old documents from the Grand Canal Company, CIE and other sources.
There are photos taken in the 1950s from the Shortall Collection and others taken in the 1980s from the Mike Clarke Collection, some of which show locations on Kildare canals, plus additional information on the first Bolinders, from the early 1900s. The barges raised from Tullamore Harbour in 2014 are included with progress on their restoration to date.
A great read for anyone with an interest in old boats and the trading days on our inland waterways.
