Foreword

This third edition of the Shell Guide to the Shannon brings the second edition up to date and contains many changes in the illustrations; most of the new illustrations were taken recently by Walter Borner specially for the Guide and he has also assisted in editing some of the German translations.

In the Foreword to the first edition of this guide reference was made to the fact that John Weaving was to have been my co-editor. Sadly he died before its completion but during his last months in hospital he worked on various aspects of the guide, calling on his dwindling strength to complete the task. For many years he had been a familiar figure at the helm of the Peter Farrell as he plied up and down the river accompanied by his faithful dogs, Brocky and Twiggy. He became 'at one' with the great river and now has become a permanent part of its legend. I hope that this guide will continue to be a fitting memorial to him. I know that I speak for his many friends when I say that it was a great privilege to have known him.

Finally, I would like to thank the Waterways Service, Northern Ireland Tourist Board and Irish Shell Ltd. for their continued interest and support in this third edition.
