On the 5th of June 2013 the Rivers Agency removed the throttle pipe from above lock 2.
This had been installed in 1972 as part of a flood alleviation scheme which was now redundant.
We have been working with Newry and Mourne District Council, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, the Loughs Agency, the Land Owner and of course the Rivers Agency since November 2011 to have this obstruction to the navigation taken out. Many thanks to you all.
This puts us well on target to open this 1.5 mile stretch of the newry canal. All we need to do is dredge some sand out of the 2 lock chambers.
The simplest way of doing this is by pumping.
