SHANNON NAVIGATION - Carrick-on-Shannon Hazard Removed
WI has advised (MN#9 of 2/2/12) that the hazard to navigation (i.e a transit van),which existed downstream of the town bridge at Carrick-on-Shannon as per Marine Notice 133 of 2011, has been removed and the Marine Notice is now withdrawn.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Limerick City - Dredging Works
WI has advised (MN#8 of 26/1/2012) that the completion date for dredging & associated works at the Hunt Museum & Arthur’s Quay Moorings has been extended until 1 March 2012. Previous Marine Notice 102 of 2011 refers.
GRAND CANAL - Ardclough - Stoppage
WI have advised (MN#7 of 25/1/12) that works will commence on 30 January 2012 necessitating closure of the 13th Level of the Grand Canal at Ardclough, Co. Kildare east of Henry Bridge. The canal will be closed to boat traffic until 17 March 2012. There will be no through access on the towpath between Henry Bridge and Aylmer Bridge during this period - See scetch map of works area here.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Lough Allen Canal - Bank Repairs
WI has advised (MN#6 of 23/1/2012) that works have commenced to repair the canal bank due to road slippage at Drumhauver, north of Drumleague Lock. The canal will be closed to boat traffic until 10th February 2012. Passage may be available from time to time during the period by prior arrangement through the Lock keeper at Drumshanbo Lock (353-(0)86 8127522)
ERNE NAVIGATION - Enniskillen - Portora Lock Closed
WI has advised (MN#5 of 18/1/12)that because of fast flow rates Portora Lock is closed to navigation. Also, due to a defective sluice gate on the weir there are fast flow rates in the vicinity of the lock. Vessels should proceed with caution in the vicinity of the lock.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Clondara - Lock Gate Works
WI has advised that work will commence on the gates of Clondra Lock commencing on Thurs 19 Jan and will be on-going for a period of four to five weeks. Alternative passage to Richmond Harbour maybe made via the Camlin river loop upstream of Tarmonbarry Lock.

SHANNON NAVIGATION - Limerick - Depths
WI has advised (MN#2 of 5/1/12) that following recent dredging works in Limerick the minimum depths available at Custom House and at Arthur’s Quay are 1.45m and 1. 80m below weir level respectively.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Tarmonbarry - Barges adrift
WI has advised (MN#1 of 4/1/12) that two work barges formerly moored south of Tarmonbarry Lock, on the western bank, have drifted across the navigation and grounded near the entrance to the Camlin River. A third barge also moored at the same location may also succumb to the present gales and follow suit. Masters are advised to keep a sharp look-out and navigate with due caution when in this section of the navigation.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Lough Ree - Firing Range mark off station
WI has advised (MN#134 of 21/12/11) that one of the green/yellow buoys fitted with a triangular topmark showing the safety limits of the Defence Forces firing range at Carnagh between navigation buoys Nos. 2 and 3, has been sighted adrift about 500m north of Nuns Island. Vessels should navigate with caution in the area.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Carrick on Shannon - Hazard to navigation
WI has advised (MN#133 of 19/12/11) that a hazard to navigation exists abeam of the floating moorings downstream of the town bridge caused by a transit van inadvertently entering the navigation from the vicinity of the car park. A yellow marker indicates the general location of the hazard. Vessels should proceed at slow speed and with due caution in the vicinity.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Shannonbridge - Interruption to Power Supply
WI has advised (MN#131 of 9/12/11) that there will be an interruption to the electrical power supply to the upstream jetties at Shannonbridge on Mon 12 Dec 2011 from 1030hrs until 1600hrs.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Ardnacrusha Headrace - Cloonlara Bridge

SEW - Eastern end restriction
WI has advised (MN#129 of 7/12/11) that to facilitate the installation of bridge beams across the SEW as part of the new Ballyconnell Inner Relief Road, navigation between Lock 1 Corraquill and Lock 2 Ballyconnell may be restricted from Sat 12 to Wed 16 Dec 2011. GRAND CANAL - Naas Branch - Water Levels
WI has advised that it is intended to drop the water level between the 2nd and 3nd Locks Naas Branch from Wed 14 to Sat 17 December inclusive to facilitate the installation of a flow meter. All vessels currently moored in this stretch of canal should move to alternative moorings for this period. Water levels elsewhere on the Naas Branch should not be affected.
ROYAL CANAL - 14th Lock - Stoppage
WI has advised (MN#126 of 1/12/11) that essential maintenance work will be carried out at the 14th Lock, Maynooth, Co. Kildare beginning Monday 5 December 2011 for a period of two weeks. Navigation through this lock will not be possible during this time.
GRAND CANAL - BARROW LINE - Monasterevin Closure
WI has advised (MN#125 of 23/11/11) that the Barrow Line of the Grand Canal will be closed at Lock 25, Monasterevin for a period of 2 weeks starting on Monday 28 Nov ‘11 for essential maintenance on gates and chamber.
GRAND CANAL - Lullymore to Ticknevin - Closure
WI has advised (MN#124 of 10/11/11 & MN#132 of 12/12/11) that the Grand Canal between Kilpatrick bridge (Lullymore) and Ticknevin Lock will be closed to navigation from 16 Nov to 29 Feb 2012 to facilitate the control/eradication of the invasive aquatic plant species Crassula helmsii ( New Zealand Pygmyweed ).
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Lough Derg - Marker Colour Change
WI has advised (MN#123 of 9/11/11) that the black starboard-hand markers will be changed to green over the winter months starting from the north end near Portumna and working south.
GRAND CANAL - Sallins - Dredging
WI has advised (MN#122 of 3/11/11) that dredging will commence in the Sallins area on Monday 7 Nov for approx. two weeks. Dredging will commence on the north bank west of town bridge for approx. 200m. Vessels should proceed at slow speed and comply with instructions from dredger crew.
GRAND, ROYAL & BARROW - Winter Closures

SEW - L14/L15 - Winter Stoppage
WI has advised (MN#118 of 26/10/11) that the stretch of navigation between Lock 14 Drumduff and Lock 15 Tirmactiernan will be closed from 7 Nov 2011 to the end of March 2012 for essential maintenance works.
SHANNON & SEW - Winter Mooring Period
WI has advised (MN#117 of 26/10/11) that the Winter Mooring Period commences on Tues 1 Nov 2011 and finishes on Wed 31 Mar 2012 inclusive. Charges as laid out in the Shannon Navigation Bye-laws, 1992 (S.I. No 80 of 1992) apply.

WI has advised (MN#116 of 21/10/11) users to expect increased water levels and extremely strong currents and flow rates following recent heavy rainfall particularly when navigating in the vicinity of jetties, locks and bridges and to note that fixed structures such as jetties and slipways are likely to submerge. Clearance under bridges will be reduced and masters should closely monitor their air draft on approach to bridges.
LOWER BANN NAVIGATION - Increased levels and flow rates
WI has advised (MN#115 of 21/10/11) users to expect increased water levels and extremely strong currents and flow rates following recent heavy rainfall particularly when navigating in the vicinity of jetties, locks and bridges and to note that fixed structures such as jetties and slipways are likely to submerge. Clearance under bridges will be reduced and masters are advised to closely monitor their air draft on approach to bridges.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - North of Lanesborough - Increased flows and levels
WI has advised (MN#114 of 21/10/11) users to expect increased water levels and strong currents following recent heavy rainfall particularly when navigating in the vicinity of jetties, locks and bridges. Some jetties are currently submerged and others remain at risk while present weather conditions persist. Warning signs have been placed at the access to these facilities. Air draft at bridges should be closely monitored on approach.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Lough Key Moorings
WI has advised (MN#113 of 20/10/11) that the moorings adjacent to the park building at Lough Key Forest Park will be closed from 21 Oct ‘11 until 31 Jan ‘12. for installation of new floating moorings. Alternative moorings are available in the park at the fixed jetties close by. The public slipway at the park will be closed from 24 to 26 Oct ‘11 to provide materials access.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Clonmacnoise jetties.
WI has advised (MN#112 of 21/10/11) that the access ramp to the Clonmacnoise moorings will be removed by Wed 26 Oct to prevent damage to the structure during the winter period.

The downstream jetties at Shannonbridge and Athlone Lock are currently submerged and unavailable for mooring. Air draft at bridges should be closely monitored on approach.

WI has advised (MN#110 of 21/10/11) boaters to expect increased water levels and strong currents following recent heavy rainfall particularly when navigating in the vicinity of jetties, locks and bridges. Fixed jetties on Upper Lough Erne jetties are currently submerged. Air draft at bridges should be closely monitored on approach.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Banagher - Search & Recovery Operation
MN#119 of 27/10/11: Search & Recover operations ended. MN#109 withdrawn.
WI has advised (MN#109 of 20/10/11) that a search and recovery operation is underway from Banagher bridge downstream towards Meelick Lock. A number of vessels are involved including a dive vessel and a sonar search craft. Masters should heed instructions issued by vessels involved and proceed at slow speed with minimum wash to avoid hindering the search craft.
BARROW NAVIGATION - Kayak race
WI has advised (MN#108 of 19/10/11) that a long distance kayak race will take place on Sat 29 Oct 2011 from Bagnelstown south to St. Mullins commencing at 12 noon and lasting about 4 hours. Masters should note the advice of event marshals and proceed at slow speed with minimum wash to avoid hindering or upsetting kayaks participating in the race.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - SEW - Aerial Survey
MN#107 of 19/10/11. The Irish Aviation Authority has advised that a low level (below 500ft) aerial survey will be conducted by a twin engined aircraft flying a triangular pattern from Sligo to Dundalk, south to Drogheda and return, commencing on Thurs 20 Oct and lasting for approximately one month. The survey will cross the navigations at various locations but principally in the vicinity of Lough Allen, Ballinamore and Belturbet. SHANNON NAVIGATION - Lough Derg - Underwater long distance swim
WI has advised (MN#106 of 18/10/11) that a charity long distance underwater swim event will take place on Lough Derg on Sun 23 Oct 2011. A single swimmer will depart at approx 09:30 from the vicinity of Inishparran Pt, near Cribby Is, Mountshannon, proceed east of Scilly Island and finish at the slip at Ballycuggeran Pier, on the western side of the navigation about 1km north of Ballyvalley Pt. The swimmer will be accompanied by four vessels during the event and a listening watch will be kept on marine VHF channel 16 throughout. Masters should note the advice of event marshals and proceed at slow speed with minimum wash to avoid hindering or upsetting the monitoring craft.
ERNE NAVIGATION - Enniskillen - Fireworks Display
WI has advised (MN#105 of 18/10/11) that a fireworks display will take place at Castle Island, Enniskillen on Oct 31 from 20:00 to 20:30. No mooring permitted at WI head office or Henry Street jetties on the day. Navigation in the vicinity of Castle Island is prohibited for the duration of the event. LOWER BANN NAVIGATION - Coleraine - Head of the River
WI has advised (MN#103 of 17/10/11) that rowing races will take place in Coleraine on Sat 12 Nov from 10:00 to 16:00 from Seaton’s Marina upstream to Christie Park public jetties. Masters should heed advice of race marshals on the water and proceed at slow speed and with minimum wash to avoid hindering or upsetting rowing craft.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Limerick - Dredging Works
WI have advised (MN#102 of 7/10/11) that dredging operations in the stretch from Baal’s Bridge to the upstream side of Shannon Bridge will commence on 17 Oct. For the purpose of this work the area is deemed to be a construction site and will be closed to navigation to all craft from 17 Oct 2011 to 1 Feb 2012. MN#101/11 also refers.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Limerick - Dredging Works
WI has advised (MN#101 of 6/10/11) that dredging operations in the vicinity of the Abbey River and Sarsfield Lock will commence on 17 Oct 2011. All vessels and boats on WI moorings in this area should be moved to other locations to facilitate the removal of floating jetties prior to the dredging operation.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Limerick - Sarsfield Lock - Reduced Hours
WI has advised (MN#100 of 6/10/11) that Sarsfield Lock will be on restricted service from the 12to 22 Oct 2011. During this time the lock will operate from 10am to 4pm daily. Masters should ring the lockkeeper on 353 (0)87 7972998 the day prior to making their passage.
ROYAL CANAL - Summit Level - Low Water
WI have advised MN#99 of 3/10/11) that due to the low water level in Lough Owel the available water depth in the summit level (between locks 25 and 26) is now reduced. Passage by deep drafted vessels may now be restricted and masters should contact the WI office at Thomastown on 353-44-9374224 before proceeding.
GRAND CANAL - Capincur - Rowing Trials
WI has advised (MN#98 of 29/9/11) that Offaly Rowing Club will be holding time trials between lock 23 and lock 24 on Sat 1 Oct from 08:00 to16:00 approx. Navigation will be restricted during this period. Vessels should heed instructions from event stewards.
ERNE SYSTEM - Beleek - Moorings Closed
WI has advised (MN#97 of 29/9/11) that the moorings at Belleek Marina will be closed to the public for improvement works from 3 to 14 Oct 2011. The public slipway at the Marina will remain in use.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Carrick on Shannon - Publicity Float
WI has advised (MN#96 of 28/9/11) that a publicity float will be anchored approx. 75m downstream of the Carrick-on-Shannon bridge on Wed 5 Oct 2011 from 12:00 until 19:00. Masters are requested to proceed at slow speed when passing the float.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Lough Forbes - Maintenance works
WI has advised (MN#95 of 28/9/11) that navigation maintenance work will commence from today, Wed 28 Sep until Fri 7 Oct 2011 in the Lough Forbes area. Masters are requested to proceed at slow speed when passing workboats and be advised by the crews of attending safety boats.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Ardnacrusha Headrace - Fish Monitors
WI has advised (MN#94 of 27/9/11) that the ESB are installing two fish monitors 140 metres downstream of Cloonlara bridge on the North bank of the headrace canal from Wed 28 Sep 2011 to Fri 27 Jan 2012. The monitors will be secured both to the bank and the canal bed and marked by red buoys. Their anchors will be marked by white buoys, while two yellow buoys will mark the outer limits of the whole arrangement from the canal bank. There will be approximately 27m of navigable channel width remaining following the installation of the monitors. Masters are advised to navigate accordingly. SHANNON NAVIGATION - Meelick - Low Water Levels
WI has advised (MN#93 of 19/9/11) that due to low water levels on the Victoria Lock upstream cill, a 5kph speed restriction should be observed from Meelick Quay to Victoria Lock in the interest of safe navigation.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Lough Derg - Hare Island - Sunken Vessel
WI has advised (MN#91 of 19/9/11) that the yacht which recently sank in the vicinity of Hare Is, near Church Bay on the western side of Lough Derg, has been located and moved to a position off the navigation approximately 30 meters to the west of the red porthand mark “B”, the sunken yacht’s position is now marked by one white and one blue floating marker. The vessel is lying at a depth of 5 meters with the mast top only 1 meter below the water surface.
SHANNON NAVIGATION - Portumna Bridge - Navigation Hazard
WI has advised (MN#89 of 15/9/11) that a set of pontoons have come adrift from one end of their mooring on the western side of Hayes Island, at Portumna Bridge and pose a danger to vessels manoeuvring in the area. Masters are advised to proceed with due caution when passing.
