Subject: [waterways] Disaster
Following the disaster in Asia it appears that even after the initial
aid gets through there will be a need to help people to re-build their
lives and livelihoods. Many fishermen have lost their boats in the tidal
waves. Perhpas the IWAI members could contribute to a fund in 2005 to
help purchase replacement fishing boats. It would be an appropriate area
for us to be involved in. Anybody interested?

Thank You
Two years on from the Tsunami that wreaked such havoc in South – East Asia, we
have decided to close our Donation Account. During the two years of the fund,
we managed to collect a magnificent €294,000 and I would like to say a final
Thank you to all our donors. The funds collected were all channelled to the
Ireland / Sri Lanka Trust,
where they used to fund 27 fishing boats and a home for the
elderly. The boats and the home are helping to make life a little more
tolerable for those fortunate enough to have survived the disaster.
Again MANY THANKS for the kind donations.

The Tsunami of December 26th, 2004 devastated many countries and destroyed lives and livelihoods across southern and S.E. Asia.
Following the initiative of members and officers of our
Lough Derg branch, IWAI decided to raise funds to purchase replacement fishing craft for Sri Lankan fishermen who are at a loss as a result of the tsunami.
The boats are 5.9m open fibreglass boats, fitted with Yamaha outboard engines and with 3 fishing nets. The local cost
was Rs400,000 (equivalent to €3,000) each.
The boats are built locally by Blue Star Marine Ltd. in Colombo, Sri
Lanka. The first boat in this scheme was funded by Hollywood (Co. Down) Fire
Station.
The purchase scheme was organised through the "Irish-Sri Lanka Trust Fund".
27 boats and a home for the elderly have been funded by IWAI donations.
The boats were named:
