Defining Day in the History of the Association as the IWAI signs contract with the RNLI

IWAI signs contracts with RNLI to build permanent lifeboat station and clubhouse facility for the association

On September 16th 2020 the IWAI President Alan Kelly and IWAI Secretary John Fitzgerald, on behalf of the members of the Association, signed the lease and building contracts to commence the build of a new lifeboat station for Lough Ree and the mid Shannon region and a clubhouse facility for the Inland Waterways. The new build will be located on the site of Dunrovin, the home of the Rice family, two of our founding members of the Association.

Dunrovin was bequeathed to IWAI by Harry and Cynthia Rice with a firm belief in the future of the organisation and a deep desire to provide a clubhouse for the Association. It is fitting in the year of the pandemic that IWAI determined against the odds, to move this project onto a firm footing and kick stared the historic build.

IWAI President Alan Kelly said “Following extensive work by the Dunrovin Development Subcommittee over the past seven years, and a vote of confidence by the Executive Directors, I am proud to sign contracts for this facility.

Mr Kelly continued “This agreement is part of a long term partnership between our two organisations and will bring certainty to both, by providing a permanent home for the lifeboat alongside the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland. “
