Hi John, 76C = yes, but not in the next few weeks as we are not supporting MapSource for a while just SD and data cards. If we can meet up on the lake sooner I can transfer it to your 76C via USB cable. Two of our beta testers have been using 76Cs.

Hi Noel that's good news.
Hope to bring boat back to Derg 9/10 august so anytime after that would be great.

Look forward to installing new charts.

Hi Noel,

Will the current release cover the Nuvis? Is there any particular SD card capacity required (1Gb or 2Gb)?
Could you also advise as to where the ID No. is available on the Nuvi? (I don't have mine to hand as I write this but hope to check it tomorrow)

Really looking forward to the new release.

Thanks,

Joe Fortune

Hi Joe

To get the UNIT ID of a Nuvi use the menu as follows from the home screen:

Toolbox icon->settings->system->about

We are planning to inlcude Nuvi's and the units we have tested so far work, but we want to test some of the newer models this week to be sure they will read the chart from SD cards and display all the data. The charts should work in a Nuvi by plugging the chart into the SD slot. No need for MapSource or USB cables, just a simple SD card.

NUVI's are not designed for Marine navigation and cannot follow routes, but can display the charts to give good situational awareness. See samples below from an older Nuvi 250:

Nuvi Before - Old Ree Coverage

Nuvi After - New Ree Coverage

Nuvi - Derg

Nuvi - Inner Lakes on Ree

Nuvi - Limerick Marina

Nuvi - LRYC channel - Nuvi screens are small so it looks cluttered

For folks who already own Nuvi's the charts will give good situational awareness even with the smaller screen.

EDIT: Btw markers do not display on Nuvi's until you zoom right into 80m level, but route lines are displayed.

Small SD cards will suffice as the charts are less than 2mb so small 128mb, 256mb, 512mb SD cards if you can still get them that small are perfectly adequate (eg old camera cards no longer needed can be used).

Hi Noel,
charts look great. Just wondering if there is any chance of the charts
being available for use on the TomTom units? I have a TomTom Rider
(1st edition) which I bought for my Honda 3 years ago, it being the
only weatherproof motorcycle satnav available at the time. As it was
(and still is) quite expensive compared to car units I am not too
eager to replace it with the Garmin equivalent (equally expensive) in
order to be able to use your marine maps.

Hi Noel

I'm using a Nuvi 1490T. Do the charts load on a micro sd card? I used the old charts from Carrick to Athlone this week and found them great apart from the purple route lines not showing on Ree. All the other routes showed ok. The danger areas were well shown on Ree. Your hard work on the new charts is much appreciated.

Yes charts work off an SD card in Nuvi's. The charts present depth info for Loughs Ree and Derg in three ways: Colour shaded depth areas, depth contours, and spot depths. Some of the newer Nuvi's will not display spot depths and that's because they are an automotive unit and not intended for marine use except some specific models designed for both car and boat (check Garmins web site). We can't effect any control over this. The "route" lines have displayed on all Nuvi's tested so far as have depth contours. Nuvi's give a good situational awareness. Perhaps some of the 15 or so new users of "Ireland Shannon G2" charts on Nuvi's might give their own feed back here in time.

Noel, not sure if you got my query re possibility of new charts being
available for TomTom sat navs. Not too hot on techie stuff so
apologies if there is a glaringly obvious reason why they cannot be
adapted to suit. Just trying to avoid expense of replacing a very good
piece of kit.
Thanks,
Phil.

Many many thanks to "oceanfroggie" and "big Dave" for the wonderful explanation and the subsequent launch of the new charts at the Lough ree sailing club yesterday(or the day before, rally time mode here) , A most helpful irtroduction to the system and an education as to how much effort these guys put into creating them.
Having purchased and tried them yesterday evening i am SO SO impressed...........in fact some of the u boats havent been seen since from water level aerial location is the only way as they have so much more navigation now!!

Hi Phil, apologies I did see your post but it got lost in the haze and fog in my mind generated by the late night on Shannon rally in LRYC last evening (too much tea and club orange). The charts will NOT work on TomTom, only Garmin equipment.

Thanks for that , Noel. Looks like I'll have to raid the piggy bank
unless the christmas list hints produce a result. What would you
recommend as the best option to show track and routes, without
breaking the bank?
Regards,
Phil.

Can I just add my appreciation to that of "Ralf" above. We have been playing around with the new charts whilst up on Rea and the accuracy of the charts and soundings is astounding(usual health warning applies naturally).
Also the colour coding of the depth contours make the whole presentation so much more user friendly. An absolute "must have" for anyone who wises to wander off the beaten track or finds themselves out in less than ideal viz conditions.
Hats-off to both gentleman and many many thanks again.

PS: Have you considerded licensing your research data to Navionics to allow them to pull their charts up to a better level.
