Pj, .
apologies, a very very busy week but did manage some 'Rambler time' and am only back on air now [ thanks Colin] . Joined the boys early Thursday morning in the beautiful Coolnahay harbour - and film crew then did some shots there and the drop to the Shannon began. Got to Ballinacargy that evening with a tired bunch - ten locks twice ! [Rambler and Scudge]. Spent a great evening in Ballinacargy [pints and chinese] even offers of marriage to young sailors! Drove at midnight to Shannon Harbour and got back to Rambler at the River Inney aquaduct in Abbeyshrule. Friday afternoon was one of those 'soft days' so crew very wet when tying up in Abbeyshrule for weekend , the local RCAG people there to welcome us.

Joe.

Well done Joe. Friday was indeed a very soft day. Lovely shots again. Combine all yours with Ciaran's and we'd have a very comprehensive photo log.

Cheers, PJ

Thanks Pj, and as I know you have a liking for a good building , here are a few lock houses from the Royal, ranging from 'needs a little work' to 'little jewel to die for'. I have to say the stonework in general on the system is superb.

Joe.

Dear Joe,

Glad to see your photos of the Royal. A good reminder of our time
there and the RCAG rallies. In those days Navigation finished at
Abbeyshrule & NEPTUNE was tower backwards from the nearest turning
point. Yes, we were very taken by the lock houses. I think in those
days (2002) the lady at Coolnahay was living in the "New" bungalow
across the canal from the old lock house where she was born, but her
siblings would not sell or let it be restored. The one at Thomastown
had been demolished.

Regards,

Roger,
[ Still with the alloy tube you supplied ]

Roger ,
great to hear from you and hope all is well. Yes the lady in Coolnahay was in great form and full of the stories from the past. This area has strong memories for me as 4E was lifted from the stretch below lock 38 in 1980. Only yesterday , I was given the names of the three men who worked her as a maintenance boat in the early 1950's before the bog breach occurred. I plan to bring 4E back here. Michelle and Joe wintered their boat at Thomastown, after coming in from the Shannon end.

All the best,
Joe.

PS hope to get back to the 'Bridgewater' around Worsley sometime- it was a lovely spot.

Roger ,you are not forgotten on this side of the pond .

JT, I love the old lockhouses. I tried very hard to buy the one at Longwood, about twenty or more years ago.
I found since that it was not occupied by a lockeeper but rather a linesman who looked after the long level.
It was in good nick then ,not like now.

Just a quick note on progress, Rambler arrived in Abbeyshrule on a very wet Friday evening and crew headed away to recover. Boats were being launched and gathered and launched for a major RCAG event [ certainly looked good] so this morning it's westwards again. This from yesterday when all was quiet.

Back with Rambler this afternoon for the final drop towards the river and it's getting there very quickly now - canal in excellant condition at this end. Tedious day getting airborne shots but has to be done.
Joe.

You know the river is close when post boxes look like this !

Well the day has finally arrived, through all the trials and tribulations of a journey like this, a photo I posted on 9th June - -

has led to this one at Begnagh Bridge, this evening ! !

Rambler, led by Scudge, sailed into Richmond Harbour after another very long day. Much celebrating for the Rambler, the Connon family, and all involved in getting this far. The story is by no means over yet, but this evening we barbecued in celebration, compliments of the 'stars'.

Very traumatic day yesterday all round. Rambler reached Richmond Harbour and I was very tempted to draw a line under this but the crew are enjoying their little bit of the limelight and twisted my arm. The grand finale - film wise -is being shot tomorrow, and there are still shots onboard to be done , so that part of the operation is still in full swing. These from yesterday,

Joe.

The 'fleet' at rest early morning in Mosstown, just before the day's action began.

Cameras rolling, doing a 'chicken run' shot from 'Scudge'.

'Rambler' moved very well this week, but didn't threaten this speed limit.

That final bridge [ had to do some hiding in the bushes, as camera rolling on bow]

Crew having a rest day with filming going on at Abbeyshrule and Ballinacargy. These few shots of the camera stuff for a flavour of what it entails.

John,

A little reminder of that first day...!!

The Ramblers on Her Way

Ten years or more she's waited,
In Ringsend's GCD,
To Ramble 'cross the Royal again,
Just like in '23,
Last year with other old boats
She went to get a feel,
Her toe to dip and once more know,
Royal water's on her keel.

This May she lead a fleet of twelve,
Across to Spencer Dock,
Her plans that day would soon be shelved,
The Royal, it seems, was blocked,
That Effin' bridge it would'nt lift
To let her on her way,
So back across to GCD,
Three more weeks, for to stay.

On June 9th, Effin' bridge went up,
Along with all our cheers,
She's free at last the cry rang out,
As Lock 1 slowly nears,
Though lack of water held her back,
And rubbish fouled her prop,
We dragged her through, and up and out,
We weren't about to stop.

John went in to clean her off,
And soon her prop was gleaming,
But that canal it wasn't done,
To slow her it was scheming,
Two foot or more of water gone,
And weed grown jungle thick,
With engine off she moves along,
Powered by Evan's stick.

Then Dessie pulls up in the jeep,
and lines are sent ashore,
"Let's tow her up to Lock 2, lads,
We'll beat this mucky @#$%&",
She flew on up to Croker,
Bounced over builders hump,
A hundred feet from Lock 2,
She met the next speed bump.

All hands on deck, we pull and heave,
So many things we try,
Ropes and straps and winch's too,
And even passer's bye,
She does'nt seem to want to go,
We can't let her be bet,
We inch her closer to the lock,
Afloat upon our sweat.

Her nose is through the lock gates,
At last we have our win,
Too tired to raise our hats and cheer,
We just sit there and grin,
Another page is written,
The Rambler's on the go,
She's finally heading West again,
Where Shannon water's flow.

Just stunning Mick, and captures that episode perfectly. In Ballyleague at the moment after a brilliant day for the final scene of the Rambler programs . Helicopter stuff over barge rafts - what more could a man want? Have the famous Mick Farrell with us for the 'wrap party' so the story goes on. Intend to post a conclusion to the epic but need time to gather thoughts [and breath!] Thanks for all the interest in 'Is feidir.........'and a few shots from Stephen Rooke [director of waterways series] from last Tuesday's aerial shots.

Joe.
