Discussion re email/forum issues (spun off from SHBR dry dock discussion)

Something peculiar happened and my response vanished.
I won't type it all out again, in case it somehow got sent.
If it did go, it was unsigned and unfinished.
Apologies.
If it didn't, I'll do it again tomorrow.
Night all

Dear oh dear as uncle gaybo might say, Oh the delights of auld friendly heritage technology - email lists. smiling smiley smiling smiley Even my dear mother well in her senior years who lives overseas can use an iPad, Skype, podcasts, Facebook and FaceTime. Some beloved regular die hard emailers just refuse to enter the modern era preferring the kludgey pain of it. winking smiley Just Kidd'n, well a bit anyway. smiling smiley

There's only about 7 regular contributors left using email, the rest seem to have discovered the benefits and ease of use of the web interface and moved over the past two years. Email lovers please don't flame me, it's about 2 years since this last came up, but interesting to see how the web forum has dominated use. Stay as you may, it's your choice, but it is better over on the 'bright side' smiling smiley

Running for cover now, hiding under a 'sent items' boulder. winking smiley "In coming . . . . "

Duncan,
Your issue below arises as we poll for new incoming emails every 13 minutes - that's the maximum delay you should experience. You were unlucky to be on the longer end of that wait.
Michael

The benefits of being up late...LOL

Actually Noel,

The problem is with the forum. I sent that "Ehhhhh....12345" by e-mail at 04.08 and coppied it to my e-mail address. It arrived by e-mail within 20 seconds. It took 5 to 6 minutes to appear on the forum, and it still has'nt been relayed by e-mail from the forum at 04.38.

Your post of 03.43 on the Rainfall thread arrived by mail at 04.31 and your post of 03.49 to "Tech Corner" arrived at 04.38.

M(W&W)F

PS...Still no sign of my e-mail of 04.08 or your post of 04.01 at 04.44....!!

But its neither perfect nor instant Noel. My mail of 04.08 took over 5 minutes to appear on the forum, still has'nt been forwarded by mail from the forum, almost 4 hours later, though my post or 04.44 arrived by mail at 05.11. The forum is chronicaly slow to forward to e-mail and seems incapable of relaying in the order received. It's no wonder people are no longer using e-mail....!!

There's a bit of Apple speak in there. " Seven regular contributors left
using email"

Whats a " regular contributor"

How many "regular contributors" are there on the other medium ?

Does one have to be " regular contributor" to be considered a user. I
imagine lots read this forum but only a minority post messages.

(Apple are notorious for the "statistics" they regularly issue and which
tend to be swallowed wholemeal by all the Apple Fan Boys. When their
statistics are examined past the point of the "Sound bite" they tend to be
highly qualified.)

Come on lads - this is a serious topic. Can we keep the tech-bashing to
Tech Corner where I don't have to read it.

Note to mod - can you control this sort of thread drift/hijacking. Oh, wait

Absolutley Agreed PJ.....This dodgy winch business could be so easily solved that it does beggar belief that it could result in the dock being closed....(possibly a whole other issue in itself)

Noel,

we use predominantly Dell machines. I do have an iPhone 4 bought because I
couldn't live with its predecessor (A Samsumg which eldest daughter is now
happily using). The paper specs on the Samsung where hunky dory but the
haptics pathetic. Having an iTouch and being familiar with the interface I
decided to cut my losses and get the iPhone. Swmbo got the iTouch and became
net addicted so I got her an iPad 2 as the iTouch is really only suitable
for emails etc. iPhone 4 is o/k. Couldn't live with the iPad interface. I
had a bad bad experiemce with Apple personnel in Cork many moons ago and
have a long memory :-(

has anybody tried facebook its better in some ways as eg.you can "like" a comment/statement and have just as much banter and if theres something on you tube for instance you can share it and comment on it. What do you think ?????
Re: Discussion re email/forum issues (spun off from SHBR dry dock discussion)
21 October, 2011 01:30
But what difference does it make whether someone "likes or dislikes" unless they say why....??

well like me as a newbie i would not comment on a disscussion as im not known here but as a newbie i can "like"a comment even if i dont know the person as for dislike it is not mentioned on facebook i read some good advice and some good slagging here and although i laugh i cant comment/like as per facebook just my opinion as a "newbie" ......

Ok Alan, as you've probably guessed by now, I dont do facebook. I assumed if you could "like" you could also "dislike". Of course you can comment. The problem I find with a "like" button thingy, is it tells me absolutly nothing about YOU. How else will we ever get to know you "on here" if you dont tell us whats in your head.

M(W&W)F

PS.....I'll never be able to "wind you up" if I only know what you "like"....LOL

Hi Alan

Yes, it can be a bit intimidating at first, especially if we're suffering from cabin fever and tearing strips off each other.
Don't be put off.
Stick your neck out.
It's well worth it, honest.
