Next question is, Why remove it? Was it dangerous, or just an eyesore ? Will it be replaced ?

Yes, it's Tullamore.

The footbridge across the canal from Convent View
to Convent Road was removed to make way
for one of the 3 new pedestrian bridges
which will be constructed across the canal this year.

It was supposedly unsafe (an engineers opinion no doubt) and had to be closed when large crowds used it exiting from the local GAA grounds, also there was the issue of wheelchair access (or as it is now known by the politically correct "universal access"). However if three other bridges are being built I don't know why this particular bridge could not have been taken away and restored, it is yet another piece of our heritage gone forever, I thought we had stopped all this destruction? The fact that it was a piece of Smith & Pearson work is even more a reason to have it preserved. No doubt lying in some scrap yard waiting to be cut up. Is this the thanks we give this stuff that served us so well?
