Royal Canal

We have about 2 weeks off at Easter time and were thinking about making our way up the Royal Canal from Clondra. We don't want to go as far a Dublin. Can anyone recommend some nice places to stop over and where to avoid. Also anyone else interested in tagging along.

Just having read the article about kayaking on the Royal in the current issue of the IWN it would appear that not only would it be difficult to travel along the Royal, is it almost impossible to even float a kayak in the canal!! Or perhaps that is all sorted now. We were thinking of travelling the Royal this year but were definitely put off by what was in that article. Anybody have any updates?

Hi Joe

I went from Clondra to Ballybrannigan Harbour (1 mile walk to Ballymahon) about 2 years ago now. It was a very nice trip. The canal was great and we were assisted by two Waterways Ireland guys who opened each lock gate before we arrived and closed them after. The next stretch to Abbeyshrule looks very nice too - we viewed some of it by car.

Hi Joe. If things improve maybe we could keep in touch and maybe have a small cruise in company.
Not looking good at the moment though.
Where do you moor up. We are up in Cootehall.
