MARINE NOTICE No 63 of 2019
SHANNON NAVIGATION
LOUGH REE
COOSAN POINT
5KMPH SPEED LIMIT AREA
INSTALLATION OF SPECIAL MARKERS

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters and owners of vessels that three yellow Special markers have been installed at Coosan Point on Lough Ree.

These Special Markers display “5 kmph” signs and mark a restricted speed area at Coosan Point slipway and Waterways Ireland jetty. All water users are requested to proceed at 5kmph in the area between these three markers.

Waterways Ireland thanks its customers for their cooperation in relation to this matter.

It will be interesting to see if the multitude of Jetskis passing this area and ski boats observe what is in effect a 2.7kt speed limit. I doubt it somehow but would welcome WI patrol wardens like up in Enniskillen with speed guns and on the spot fines for abusers. Once again wake is the issue rather than speed even though they can correlate. Hope WI also put up no wake signs. A speed boat at 30kts create almost no wake but a heavy cruiser or hire boat at 8kt can through up plenty of wake, not to mention open angling boats nose stuck up in the air with a 15hp outboard blaring away. Such speed zones have to be welcomed but they need an effective means of enforcement for it to be effective. This is Ireland after all.

Agreed, Noel. Hopefully the recent precedent-setting case in Strokestown means a new policy is going to be pursued by WI. But we all have to play a part, no point in complaining if you don't want to follow up.
