The President of IWAI Brian Cassells today warmly welcomed the announcement last Saturday night by the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern of plans to restore and re-open the Ulster Canal.

He said: “On behalf of the members of our association, and inland waterways enthusiasts everywhere, I would like to thank the Taoiseach for his commitment to the restoration and re-opening of the Ulster Canal at the Ard-Fheis on Saturday night.”

Mr. Cassells went on to say that IWAI believed that re-instating this “missing link” in our inland waterways network would bring major benefits to the communities living in the canal corridor and would be a major boost to the development of tourism in the region.  It would of course also be of great benefit to IWAI members in providing them with additional waterways to explore and enjoy.

He said that IWAI was committed to working in partnership with the statutory authorities to ensure the success of this project and would welcome the opportunity to meet with the project team at the earliest possible date.

Mr. Cassells also acknowledged the support and commitment shown by Éamon Ó Cuív, Minister for Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs to the project over the last number of years.
