Drumshanbo Lock is a double-acting lock. It can work whether the level of the lake is below or above that of the canal. It has moorings, water, light, a shower and toilet block, a lock-keeper’s office, a pump out and bins. It is a 12 minute walk from Drumshanbo.

Clarendon Lock, Knocknivar

Clarendon Lock is the only lock on the Boyle River between the confluence with the Shannon and Lough Key. There can be a strong sideways push from the weir when approaching from downstream.

Albert Lock & Bridge

The Albert Lock sits at the southern end of the Jamestown Cut. This bypasses the unnavigable stretch of river between Drumsna and Jamestown.

Bridge Headroom: 11ft closed / 20ft open

High air draught boats will require the lifting bridge to be raised when passing up or downstream from Roosky. The lock keeper is also the bridge keeper.

Tarmonbarry, Clondra & Richmond Harbour Locks

Headroom: 9ft closed / 17ft open. The same type of bridge as Roosky, this bridge is located immediately upstream of the lock, and is operated by the Tarmonbarry Lock Keepers. When coming from upstream, you can contact the lock either by phone, if you have a cell phone on board, or by mooring at the jetty above the bridge and walking down to the lock. In the summer months, you will get through by just waiting for the next lock-full of boats heading upstream.

Athlone Lock, Athlone

A large lock chamber, but care is required when approaching from either side, as the neighbouring weir has strong course deviating effects in spite of shuttering.

A large lock chamber – The first lock upstream from Lough Derg. No particular hazards or problems here, apart from minimal mooring.

Portumna Bridge

Effectively delimiting the northern tip of Lough Derg, Portumna Bridge is not negotiable by any craft with air draft of anything more than a rowboat. The bridge does not open by request, but rather at fixed times of the day.
