IWAI Royal Canal

Welcome to the IWAI (Inland Waterways Association of Ireland) Royal Canal Branch.

We represent boaters, canal users and enthusiasts on the Royal Canal. Our members are strung out along the canal from it’s junction with the Shannon at Richmond Harbour to the Kildare border. From Kildare to Spencer Dock, where the canal joins the Liffey, the canal is represented very ably by the IWAI Kildare and Dublin branches.

Spring Rally – Small Boat Rally

Sat 23rd – Sun 24th March, Mullingar Harbour. Our spring rally will take place in the harbour in Mullingar. Since most of our boating members have wintered on the Shannon due to low levels on the Royal last autumn this is an ideal opportunity for a small boat rally. Even if levels are low at the time, small boats should be able to take to the canal. We had planned to make this a Clean-Up the canal event and remove reported junk around the Mullingar section. However, Waterways Ireland have recently done a wonderful job of removing litter and junk from the Mullingar area. Instead we are planning a small boat trip to Mary Lynch’s for lunch on saturday, returning to the Harbour in the afternoon. On sunday we hope to take small boats out on lough Owel and have refreshments in Mullingar Sailing Club – many thanks to them for allowing us use their lovely facilities.
