IWAI Royal Canal

Welcome to the IWAI (Inland Waterways Association of Ireland) Royal Canal Branch.

We represent boaters, canal users and enthusiasts on the Royal Canal. Our members are strung out along the canal from it’s junction with the Shannon at Richmond Harbour to the Kildare border. From Kildare to Spencer Dock, where the canal joins the Liffey, the canal is represented very ably by the IWAI Kildare and Dublin branches.

Upcoming events in 2020 are creating great interest!

The 2020BC (big cruise), is showing great potential in attracting boaters onto the canals. The Royal Canal branch will be hosting a couple of events, the prime one being Float to the Fleadh. Situated in Mullingar Harbour in the centre of Mullingar, Float to the Fleadh will run from August 2nd-9th. Places will be limited (max 30) so keep an eye on the website and register your boat as soon as possible. The registration form is on the 2020BC page on this website.

Our Spring Rally 2020 (which is part of the 2020BC) is coming up soon, early in April. Boats move from Mullingar on Saturday April 4th and move to Lock 22. We will overnight there and spend the evening with friends in Cunningham’s (aka The Hideout). On Sunday April 5th we move the short distance down to Thomastown Harbour at Lock 18 for the rally festivities. We will host a BBQ, visit Float No.3 and meet locals. Boats traveling east from Carrick, bound for Dublin, will catch us up in Thomastown to join us there for the day. There should be lots of activity in the harbour!

Autumn Rally 2019 – Clondra & Longford Junction

Friday Evening 11th – Sun 13th October, Starting in Richmond Harbour. Our autumn rally took place in early October. We planned to stay in Richmond Harbour on Friday night and move to Longford Junction the following morning. We hoped to have a large turnout of boats at Longford Junction where we held a BBQ. As the Heritage Boat Association planned to winter some barges in Mullingar we hoped to link with them for the weekend and fill the Longford Junction. As it happened dates didn’t match for some but we still had six boats at the Junction. More importantly we hooked up with local councillors and discussed the future of the Longford Line – little steps!
